STEWARTSTOWN -- Gordon R. Gray 83, died Aug. 20, 2004, at his Washington Street residence in West Stewartstown after a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 28, 1920, in Canaan, Vt., the son of Leo and Mildred (Richards) Gray. He was a 1938 graduate of Canaan High School.
He married Addie Elliott on Jan. 18, 1944. Mr. Gray attended the Franklin Technical Institute in Massachusetts and then went on to work for Pratt and Whitney Corp., in Connecticut.
His efforts at Pratt and Whitney led to the development of several U.S. patents. After a few years he moved back to Colebrook, where he was employed by Nugent Motors as a mechanic. In the early 1950s he purchased his own garage in Canaan, Vt., which he ran until the early 1970s. The garage was also the local John Deere dealership. Mr. Gray designed and built a cover used to protect skidder drivers, which was later adopted by the John Deere Corp.
Mr. Gray enjoyed working and spending time with his dog.
He was predeceased by his wife, Addie Gray, and by a son, Mahlon Gray.
Family members include two sons, Richard Gray of Bainbridge, N.Y., and Donald Gray of Kittery, Maine ; a daughter, Patricia Grover of West Stewartstown; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.
SERVICES: There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held Sunday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m. at Assumption Cemetery, Canaan, Vt.
