Frederick C. Carsten, age 77 of Durand, passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2009 at Avalon Hospice in Flint. A mass of christian burial will be held at 11:00am on Monday, December 28, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church 700 E. Columbia Dr. Durand, MI 48429 with the Rev. Msgr. Steven Raica officiating. The family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel on Saturday from 6-8pm and again on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8pm with the rosary being prayed at 7:00pm. Mr. Carsten was born on January 7, 1932 in Flint, MI the son of Lyle and Emma (Root) Carsten. He attended Byron High School graduating in 1952. That same year, he married his first wife, Margaret Eisele. She passed on June 7, 1968. After graduating from High School, Mr. Carsten went right into the military serving in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On July 7, 1973 he married Linda Hatherill in Durand. Mr. Carsten was a Construction Superintendent with Forrester Construction, retiring in 1980 after 30 years of service. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Durand, the Durand Knights of Columbus and the Durand VFW Reed-Raymond Post 2272. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Linda; 6 children: Michael (Sharon) of Fenton, Terry (Mary) of Linden, Loretta (William) Carnes of Clarkston, Debra McCarry of Walloon Lake, MI, Mary Rockafellow of Clio, Anne (Jeff) Pincheck of Evart; 13 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 9 brothers and sisters as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both parents, 2 sister and 3 brothers. Donations are suggested to the Lazarus Project at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
