JAMES T. SHORT
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (PA) - Wednesday, June 20, 2007
James T. Short, a decorated World War II veteran and a former motorcycle police officer, died of heart failure on Saturday.
He was 89 and had been in UPMC Montefiore.
Mr. Short became a Pittsburgh police officer in 1952.
He started with a beat on the North Side, covering Spring Garden and Troy Hill.
He rose through the ranks, becoming a sergeant in the traffic division, where his family says in 1962 he became the first motorcycle officer to wear a helmet on the job.
A humble man, Mr. Short never talked much about his work, but there were many interesting incidents in his career.
He was the first motorcycle officer through the Fort Pitt Tunnel when it opened in September 1960.
When President Kennedy came to town, he flew in the helicopter to locate landing spots in case of emergencies.
He worked security detail when the Beatles performed in town.
With his shift over, his children would wait for him to return to his South Side home. They'd wait at the bottom of Industry Street in Allentown and sit on the gas tank and their dad would ride them up the hill.
Mr. Short eventually became a police inspector and resigned from the force in 1974. He then became security supervisor at the Gulf Building and retired in 1985.
Mr. Short grew up during the Depression. His father worked at the J&L steel mill and the family of seven children lived in a one-room house.
Mr. Short graduated from South Hills High School in 1936 and went to work at the Jones & Laughlin mill before volunteering for the Army Air Forces during WWII.
He was a first lieutenant fighter pilot and dive bomber pilot, flying the P-40 Warhawk and the P-47 Thunderbolt. He earned four battle stars and two presidential citations.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Brennan Short of Swisshelm Park; his children, Janice Karl of Selbyville, Del., Roger Short of Mount Washington, Sandra Severns of Cecil, and James Short of Swisshelm Park; and three grandchildren.
A blessing will be held today at 9:30 a.m. in McCabe Brothers Funeral Home, 6214 Walnut St., Shadyside.
Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today in Sacred Heart Church, Shadyside.publication logoPittsburgh Post-Gazette (PA) - Wednesday, June 20, 2007CITE THIS RECORDPittsburgh Post-Gazette () , obit for JAMES T.
