Don Miguel Toribio Alatorre, born 1735. A wealthy upperclass land owner with the hereditary title of Count of Santa Cruz. His brother, Rene Carlos Alatorre was granted the hereditary title of the Count of Lerida.
Don Miguel Toribio (Count of Santa Cruz) was less of an administrator than his father, and his brother Don Rene Carlos (Count of Lerida) succeeded in breaking off a part of the estate for himself. It is not unusual for such a spread-out estate and business to eventually fracture under its own weight, as labor challenges increase, taxes become more difficult,and good managers for each entity are in short supply. Add a few droughts to deplete the cash crops, or increased taxes to finance wars and exploration of new trade routes, and a thriving entity can soon be substantially spread out.
Additionally, the size of the family now spending the money has dramatically grown: from Don Toribio and his small family, there was a lot to share (and he added a lot, himself). His son divided things even more with his own family, additional estates and houses, etc., but also added lands and new businesses. With the wealth came a larger family and a higher social status, complete with nicer homes and improved furnishings. But when that wealth is now divided over a number of grandchildren, none of whom can necessarily increase the revenues to keep up with the growing number of family members, the pro rata share decreases. Simply put, there became a period of too many people relying on too few resources for them all to live a life ofleisure and not work themselves. And raising taxes on the local farmers only goes so far. So a period of financial stagnation appears to have set in, which may have been aggavated by the departure ofDon Rene Carlos and his estates..
