Clements to his old Friend Jehu Fletcher, written from the Confederate Camp. Goldsboro, N. C. May 16, 1862 Mr. Jehu Fletcher, Dear Friend: I, this evening avail myself of the opportunity of writing you afew lines which leaves me in the enjoyment of better health than I'veenjoyed since I've been in camp. I have not been able to drill five dayssince I've been in camp. I recieved your very kind letter of April 9,today and was glad to hear that you were still improving in health andglad to hear that your family was well, but i was sorry to hear of thehard times in old Irwin but it has turned out about as I expected so far.Issac M. Young, Joseph R. Sumner, William Fletcher, George A. Luke, andyour son Joseph, arrived here today about 12 o'clock. I went to Col.Manning as he is the commander-in-chief of the Regiment at this time.Col. Lane left here yesterday on furlough to go home for ten days. I wentto him and done all I could to get Joseph in your place, but it was allin vain, he informed me that Joseph could join this company or else bearhis expenses home and be subject to the conscript law but he told me ifyou would send a man that was exempt from the conscript law that wassound, he could take your place, if not you would have to come yourselfimmediately. I think if you are not able to do military duty if you willcome and undergo an examination you will get a discharge, as they havedischarged several men from this Regiment and some men have come heresince the conscription law became enforced and brought substitutes andpaid them as high as $500 to take their places. I will now tell you something about the condition of our company. We have four men in Augusta. Benjamine Watson died in Augusta a few daysago and we have some sick at a place called Wilson in this state andseveral in the hospital in Goldsboro and 12 sick in camp, they have notrecovered from measles and mumps. John Roberts is sent to the hospitaland says he has the rheumatism, he limps very bad in walking. G. W.Haymans was sent to the hospital this morning. He has disease of theliver so the Dr. says. There is 200 returned sick in the Regiment everymorning upon an average so the adjutant told me this morning. Our men arenot dangerous but it appears they can not get hearty. twelve or fifteenof them has been in the hospital over a month and I can not tell how muchlonger they may remain there. Give my respects to all inquiring friends. Please say to Mr. Fenn to write me if his bond is for P. M. yet or not, Iwrote him today but forgot to mention it. Tell Jacob to write me as I amgoing to write him a long letter in a few days, Belive me to still remainyours as ever. Signed, R. W. Clements Joseph has concluded to join this company. Ga. Census. Irwin County Fletchers and Our Kin, Gladys Mcmillan, Copyright 1985. At the time President Davis was captured, Rev. Jacob Young, aPrimitive Baptist minister, lived one mile east of Irwinville Ga.Wednesday, the day of the capture, had been assigned by Mr. Young as theday to gather and shear his sheep and he had invited his friends andneighbors to come and assist him in the work. In response to hisinvitations they came, many of whom were ex-Confederate soldiers. It wascustomary on such occasions for them to carry their guns and after thesheep shearing was over they would engage in a deer hunt or uponreturning home, try to kill a deer to take home for the family larder. Onthis occasion many were at Mr. Young's house, their guns being stackedalong the yard fence as the day's work had not commenced. No one knew ofthe capture of Mr. Davis, some had heard the report of the guns but noone knew what it meant. Just at that time there appeared upon the scenetwo of the Yankee Calvary, who rode into the yard and went to Mr. Young'ssmokehouse and looked at his meat, then rode to the crib and looked athis corn and then told Mr. Young they had to have to corn to feed theYankee horses and the meat to feed their men. Mr. Young prevailed withthem not to take his meat and corn; that if they did his family as wellas quite a few widows and orphan children he was assisting, would suffer. This had no effect upon them, they stating that wagons would be along assoon as they returned, for it, but it was noticed that the Yanks kepttheir eyes on the men and the guns. They soon left and the wagons did notappear. It was supposed that they decided that the men with the guns werethere to protect Mr. Young's property and to molest it, they would againhave to face the bullets of the southerners as they had to their sorrowin the past.
