William Robert VanDyke joined the 55th Regiment, Company C of theConfederate Army on March 29, 1862. Then on April 25, 1863, he signed hiswil and gave a Power of Attorney to J. J. Price to administer the will ofJames Vandyke. William Robert died on January 3, 1864 at Point Lookout, Maryland.William's will reads as follows: "I William R. VanDyke of the County of Cleveland and State of NorthCarolina being of sound mind and memory but considering the uncertaintyof my earthy existance do make and declare this my last will andtestament in manner and form following that is tosay First that myexecutor hereinafter named shall provide for my body a decent burialsuitable to the wishes of my relatives and friends and pay all funeralexpenses together with my just debts and to whomever owing out of themoneys that may first come into his hands as a part of my estate. Item 1I give an devise to my brother Lewis VanDyke all that track of landwhereon I now live to have and to hold to him and his heirs in fee simpleforever. Item 2 I give and bequeath unto my brother Lewis VanDyke my darkbay mare now four years old to have to hold to him and his heirs forever.Item 3 I give and bequeath to my sister Nancy VanDyke, wife of EmmanualMauney my red cow and calf to have and to hold forever. Item 4 I give andbequeath to my brother Lewis VanDyke all my household and kitchenfurniture and my tools and tackling to have and to hold forever. Item 5 Igive and bequeath to my sister Nancy VanDyke, wife of Emmanual Mauney,all my stock of sheep to have and to hold forever. Item 6 My will anddesire is that all the remainder of my estate remain on the plantationfor the sole use of my brother Lewis S. VanDyke [note by Cecil VanDykeLewis, was wounded while serving in the Confederate Army] and my desireis that my brother Lewis S. VanDyke pay all my just debts and lastly I dohereby appoint my brother Lewis S. VanDyke my lawful executor to allintents and purposes to execute this my last will and testament carefullyto the true intent and meaning of the same and every part and cancel (?)thereof reporting and cancelling written void all other wills andtestaments by me heretofore made. I the same William R. VanDyke dohereunto set my hand and seal this 27th day of April 1863." In 1870, John J. Also at the same time, Mr. Price filed the followingsettlement with the Clerk of Court in the Estate of James Vandyke: Sale conducted on July 22, 1868......................................$36.55 Sale made by William R.
