Notizen zu dieser Person
William, born in Aachen, Germany, was the second son of Ludwig Seyffardt and his wife Mathilde Scheibler. After finishing school, he spent his apprenticeship as a merchant in a store in Frankfurt, Germany. Upon completion of the apprenticeship, he informed his father he was not interested in merchandising, and announced that he would like to go to America. His father insisted that William learn farming before leaving Germany, and he did just that. On the morning of Monday, April 14, 1850, the young Rhinelander sailed on the steamer Washington from Bremerhaven and on April 20, left from Southampton. He arrived in New York on May 4. After working in various jobs between New York and Michigan, he ended his travels in Saginaw, where he met a farmernamed August Barck, and August's sister-in-law Sophie Frank. On June 25, 1852, William and Sophie were married and began their lives as farmers in Titibawassee near Saginaw. They had nine children, six of whom survived to adulthood.
Farming was a struggle, and the young couple also suffered the loss of a saw mill to fire. So in May of 1863, William sold the farm and moved to Saginaw where he soon established a successful hardware store.
Among William's attributes was a talent for music. He had an incredible tenor voice, and was an accomplished violinist and bandoneon player.
William's lungs were weakened from years of infections, perhaps brought about by spending time outdoors hunting. On Jun 9, 1971, William died at the age of 42, just one week after thedeath of his father in Germany.
