1817, Aug 18: John Tucker, Jr, and Nancyhis wife to John Tobin 25 acres on Poe's Road, being part of the land Tucker lives on. Consideration $250. Recorded 16 Mar 1818 [Culpeper Co., VA, Deed book II, pages 375-377].

 

Personal property taxlists for Loudoun, Culpeper, and Rappahannock Cos., VA 1795, Sep 8: "Isaac Tobins & John Tobins" paid taxes on 2 tithables and 2 horses, District (C?), Loudoun Co.,VA. This is the first listing I have found for John Tobin. In the years that follow he is listed as a son of Isaac. The last listing for John in Loudoun County is 1805. He is not listed in 1806.

The Culpeper County personal property taxlists for 1805-1810 are missing.

 

1811, Apr 20: "John Tobin" paid $.12 tax for 1 tithable and 1 horse, District of Daniel Brown, Culpeper Co., VA.

1815 taxes had to be paid for cattle, that year John paid taxes on 2 tithables, 1 horse, and 2 cows. Slaves 12 and over were taxed and John paid taxes on 1 slave over 16 in 1817 and 1818.

1822 through 1825 he paid taxes on 1 slave over 12. From 1811 through 1832 he was taxed on 1 or 2 horses except for 1831 when he paid taxes on 3 horses.

 

1833-1834 Did not find listed in the Rappahannock Co., Virginia, personal property taxlist

1835, Feb 27: "John Tobin" paid $.43 tax for 2 tithables, 1 slave over 16, and 3 horses William Menefree's Dist., Rappahannock Co., VA. The next year he no longer paid taxes for owning a slave. From 1841 to 1850 John Tobin paid taxes on 4 horses, except for 1843 whenhe paid taxes on 5 horses. In 1842 he also listed a clock which was taxed. I did not check the tax records from 1851-1858. The last year John paid taxes was 1860.

 

May1836 Fanny Withers and Jno Tobin ordered to appear at the next open court at Rappahannock County, Virginia, to show cause why a surveyor should not be appointed over the road leading from Poe's Roadat or near said Tobin's House through the farms of said Tobin and Withers to the Rappahannock River [Rappahannock Co., VA, Minute Book A p.435, May Court 1836]

 

1860, Mar 29: "John Tobin, Sr." paid $1.75 tax for 1 tithable and 1 male over 21, 1 clock valued at $2.00, household furniture valued at $25.00, and 4 cattle

Common Law Causes and Judgments June 1849 (Withers v. Tobin) Rappahannock Co., VA. In August 1847 Fanny Withers applied to the Rappahannock County Court to have a road opened from Sandy Hook by her mill to the Poe's Road near John Tobin. The file includes a plat that shows the locationof John Tobin's house.
