1. Thomas HANKINSON, b. ENG. Unsure of first name. Possibly originated from Middlesex Co., Eng., May or may not have come over to US. Family settled in Monmouth Co., NJ c. 1684/5. Main material for family taken from This Old Monmouth of Ours, by William S. Hornor, Cottonport, 1974, pp.103-7, 158-60. There was a Tobias HANCESON in a 1695 NJ tax roll (another source gives HENDRICKSON), and a George HANKINSON in 1607 VA.

He married Jane/Jean _____, in ENG, d. fall 1692. Jane/Jean: The first Hankinson to set foot in North America, was Jane Hankinson from York, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. She landed with her three sons, Thomas, Peter and Richard in indentured servitude (Record of Indentures in the New Jersey State Archives Library of Deeds) to the ship's Captain on March 31,1683 at Amboy, New Jersey. From her indentured status on arrival she must have been without funds and worldly goods, perhaps widowed at an early age. When Jane died in 1692, Richard, her son sold the family farm (120 acres granted by warrant in December 1689) and moved off first to Virginia and then to South Carolina where he established a large plantation which still stands today as the small hamelet of Hankinson, South Carolina.
