William (Bill) Hughes, 71, Stanhope, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002 at Crestview Manor in Webster City, Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Stanhope with Rev. Joseph Lambert to officiate. Burial will be in the Neese Cemetery, northwest of Stanhope. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral Home from 5-9 p.m. Monday and prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. William Roger Hughes, son of Samuel and Emeline Neese Hughes, was born July 14, 1930 on the family's farm, that dates back to 1845, north of Stanhope. He was the fifth generation on his mothers side to reside in Hamilton County. One July 17, 1949, he married Virginia Mae Plager at the Blairsburg Congregatinal Church. The couple farmed north of Stanhope and in the Blairsburg area for many years. He was also a journeyman carpenter and worked on many major building projects in the Ames and Des Moines areas. Mrs. Hughes died Oct. 8, 2000. He had resided at Crestview Manor for the past month. Mr. Hughes is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Roger Hughes of Forest City, Craig and Denise Hughes of Webster City, Jim and Karlene Hughes of Boone, daughter, Holly Hughes of Boulder, Colo.; grandchildren, Roger William Hughes II, Megan Mae Hughes, Chelsey Madsen, Matthey, Jeffrey and Elizabeth Whiton; former daughter-in-law, Vicki Hughes of Marion. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Other memberships include Iowa Pork Producers, Hamilton County Farm Bureau, Demoley; in his youth, the Hamilton Herders 4-H Club, in his high school years, he received his pilot's license; was active in the Republican Party and was a frequent delegate to state conventions; Bill's musical talent was shared in many ways, playing in Bills's Band, or the Depot Band in care facilities and at many celebrations.
