At the time of his father's death, he had received a cash reward of $500 from Modern Woodmen of America, of which his father was a member. Because George was a minor, his older brother and guardian, Herman Charles Ratz, held onto this money until George reached the legal age of 21. Born March 6, 1890, in Rochester, Ill. Address, Rochester, Ill. Entered service July 9, 1918, in Springfield, Ill. Received his training at Rahe Army Auto School, Kansas City, Mo., and Camp Joseph E. Johnston, Fla. Sailed overseas September 17, 1918, on the Mentor. Stationed at St. Nazaire, France, and Brest, France. Was at Brest, France, when the Armistice was signed. Discharged September 16, 1919, at Camp Grant, Ill. Veteran of WWI. Source - his death certificate. Buried in lot 3, block 35, 2nd grave. Died at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. Source - his death certificate. Obituary: George W. Ratz, of Rochester, died at 11:45 p.m. yesterday in St. John's Hospital where he became a medical patient at 5:45 p.m. yesterday.
