Rodgers of Mercer County, Missouri

The life of no citizen of Mercer county, Mo., is more indissolubly linked with the moral and religious progress of the community than that of David F. Loutzenhiser, pioneer minister of the gospel, who is now spending his life in Ravanna township. His father Jacob Loutzenhiser, a native of Pennsylvania, and his mother, Arvilla McKinley, native of Ohio, were pioneers of the year 1855. David F. was born in Middletown, Logan county, Ill., September 8, 1854 , and settled with his parents in Mercer County when one year of age. His father then entered the land where the old homestead now stands. David F. was educated, partly in Grundy County and partly at Ravanna, where he has lived all his life with the exception of seven years. In 1876, at Old Alpha, in Grundy County he married Emma Zully. Emma Zully's parents emigrated from Sursee, Switzerland, in the year 1850, when they were 52 days crossing the water andsettled in Highland, Ill., where Emma was born, October 31, 1858. She moved with her parents to Alpha, in Grundy County in 1870, and was united in marriage to D. Loutzenhiser Octobe r 30, 1876. Tothis union were born three children: Wm. Loutzenhiser, born September 3, 1877; Bertha, born August 20, 1879, now the wife of I. P. Lieuallen, living in Ada, Okla., where he is practicing law. David F. Loutzenhiser was constable of Wilson township, Grundy County, for two years, and while there received a post office appointment but declined to serve. He has served as Mayor of Ravanna. His firstbusiness experience was as a harness maker. Afterward he tried the hardware and dry goods businesses, and for thirty years has owned a farm near Ravanna. Since its establishment in 1906 he has beenpresident of the Ravanna Bank. His chief service, however has been a minister of the gospel. He was pastor of Fairview Church, in Grundy County, missionary of the North Grand River Baptist association for one year, pastor of Old Pine Church for two years and at Hunter one. He has been a member of the Baptist church at Ravanna for nineteen years. For three years of this time he and Rev. J. A. Kennedy filled the pulpit a lternately. For two years he alone was pastor. At other times he has presided in the absence of the regular pastor. He also preached for the Methodists for ten years. Heis said to have married more people and preached more funerals in Ravanna than any other man. In one year he preached thirty-six funeral sermons. William H. Loutzenhiser is an insurance agent, notary public and dealer in real estate and loans at Ravanna. Jacob L. Loutzenhiser was educated at Ravanna, then at the Kirkville Normal and finally took af our year course (pages 517-518-519 are missing) - Mark Painter
