"Jack Brockman Fowler, 76, died Oct. 28, 1997, in B.J. Workman Hospital
after a long illness. A native of Spartanburg County, he was a son of Mamie
Lou Fowler of Spartanburg and the late Winfield Wilson Fowler. He was a
member of Ancient City Baptist Church, St. Augustine, Fla. He also was a
Sunday School teacher and past chairman of the Board of Deacons for Bellview
Baptist Church in Woodruff.
He was the first Spartanburg County graduate of the FBI Academy and was a
First Captain of Detectives of Spartanburg County. He was a member and past
chairman of Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Board of Directors and was
honored by the dedication of a parking garage in his name at Spartanburg
Regional Medical Center. He was the land acquisition manager for the con-
struction of the Greenville/Spartanburg Airport, manager for the Woodruff Oil
Co. and a regional test manager for Military Entrance Exams. He was president
of the Woodruff Rotary Club, past master of Crescent Masonic Lodge, District
4 School Board Trustee and a member of Charleston Medical Center Visitors
Board. He was a veteran of World War II and first married to the late Lois
Evelyn Newman Fowler.
Survivors include his wife, Clarice V. Fowler of St. Augustine, Fla.; two sons,
James R. Fowler Sr. of Wellford and Sgt. 1st Class Winfield Wilson Fowler of
Woodruff; three daughters, Jackie Fowler George and June Fowler Hance of
Spartanburg and Jeanne Fowler Scogin of Atlanta; two sisters, Velma Humphries
of Spartanburg and Dora Edwards of Duncan; two brothers, Don W. Fowler of
Greer and Newell D. Fowler of Lake St. Louis, Mo; two stepsons; four step-
daughters; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the Wood mortuary.
Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Bellview Baptist Church
Cemetery, Woodruff, conducted by the Rev. David Buyier and Dr. James T.
Sloane. The family is at the home of Winfield Wilson Fowler, 248 Sloan Road,
Woodruff. Memorials may be made to the Billy Thackison Liver Transplant
Fund, c/o Woodruff State Bank, 131 S. Main St., Woodruff, 29388."
