August Julius Brockmann, Sr. was born in Osnabrück, Hannover, Prußen, Germany on 2 June, 1827. His father, Johann Ludolph Brockmann was a fresco painter who died when August was very young.August’s childhood friend was Ernst Raven. At the age of fifteen, the two boys became obsessed with the idea of going to sea. Since their fathers were both dead, and their mothers had o objections, they carried out their plans and obtained positions as cabin boys. They endured many hardships but had interesting adventures. After several voyages, August entered a navigation school from which he graduated.After graduation, he made numerous long voyages on sailing vessels, sometimes being gone for two months on one trip. Besides taking him to England and the United States, these trips carried him to South America, India and China. When he was eighteen, August became engaged to Bertha Raven, sister of his friend, Ernst Raven - a dainty girl whom he had admired for years as a child. Bertha refused to marry him unless he gave up the sea and so, at the age of 25 and with the rank of Captain, her followed her wishes. They were married at Marienekirche of Osnabrück on 23 November, 1852.A few days after their wedding, they sailed for America to make their home. Had they forseen the impending crisis of the War for Southern Independence, they would probably never had left Germany. They arrived in Batlimore, MD in the latter part of January, 1853. From Baltimore, they went by rail to Raleigh, NC and then by stagecoach to Asheboro, NC at the suggestion of a friend. After a few weeks in Asheboro, the Brockmanns bought a farm seven miles from town on Deep River. Although he had never farmed, August managed to do fairly well for the next seven years. During this time, the couple’s first three children were born.Since there were no schools nearby, and since education was very important to them both, the Brockmanns sold their farm and moved to Greensboro, NC, which was the county seat in the neighboring county of Guilford. About this time, August made a trip back to Germany to visit his mother. While there, he learned the art of cigar making. Upon his return to Greensboro, he and Mr. Zeke Jones engaged in the manufacturing of cigars.They were doing very well in this buisness when the War for Southern Independence (The U.S. Civil War) began in 1861. Not being in sympathy with the Rebel cause, August refused to fight. He was then conscripted by the Confederacy and sent to Wilmington, NC to work in the Government salt works. He remained there until the close of the War and then returned home broken in health and spirit; business and all money gone and a family which had grown by two more children.After returning to their house at 410 East Market Street in Greensboro, the Brockmanns setteld in with the rest of the country to the task of Reconstruction. August opened a small store on the corner of Elm and Sycamore Streets. His stock of goods consisted of confectionaries, toys, small musical instruments, tobacco and such. For many years, a wooded Indian maiden stood in front of the store as a tobacco sign. Today, this figure is housed at the Historical Museum in Greensboro. After a few years, August gave up the Elm Street location and built a small store on the corner of his home. Here, for a number of years, he conducte a “corner grocery’. The neighborhood boys and his grandchildren would congregate in the store and listed to his “sea yarns” which he told with gusto in his German accent.After the War, three more sons were added to the family. As the boys grew up, they all helped out in the store, giving August more time to tend to his graden. He successfully cultivated many vegetables and fruits.Among the friends of the Brockmanns were members of the Porter family, including William Sydney Porter who later gained fame writing short stories under the pseudonym of “O’Henry.”August served on the Greensboro, NC Board of Commisioners from 1872-1884. On 19 February, 1898, he was at work in the Phoenix Building in Greensboro, splicing elevator rope. Because of his experience as a sailor, he was the only man in town who could properly splice rope. After joking that in his younger days, he could do this kind of work while standing, he sat down in a chair, exclaimed “Oh!” and fell. By the time the doctor arrived, August was dead.While he lead a quiet and unassuming life, he is mentioned in most all histories of his community.
