Raymond was born in Sprague, Ne. (Lancaster County) to a German-Frenchfamily, one of eight children, 3 boys 5 girls.The first boy, Henry Harry Krull died at birth.The family made their living by farming, roadconstruction and carpentry.When Raymond was a young boy, mechanics wasbased on horse drawn machinery, and the mechanics of the gas combustion engine was just beginning.At age 17, Ray bought his first automobile which had been wrecked and with the help of a mechanic in the town of Sprague, they repaired the car and Ray learned how to drive a car.For the rest of his life, mechanics would be important in his life and he loved cars.One of his sayings was, "At 40 years old a man does one of two things to get himself in trouble, he either buys an expensive car he has no business with, or he takes up with a young women which hehas no business with, either one, he's got trouble." Ray worked very hard most of his life, raising four children, three girls and one boy.He served in the US Navy during World War II for almost two years, he was wounded in a fall aboard a ship off the coast of Siapan during a hurricane in 1943. (Hancock, AKA) Raymond and Margaret ranched for a number of years living in Box Butte County (22 miles west of Alliance, Ne) on the Snake Creek Ranch (owner: John Cook).Ray loved living there and enjoyed telling the history of the ranch. In 1902, a man by the name of Kirkpatrick bought or flayed claim to many thousands of acres onthe Snake Creek, which begins west in Sioux County and flows south-easterly, the ranch being located in Box Butte and Scottsbluff Counties.After a few years there, Kirkpatrick built a dam which was about 3/4 miles long and it formed the Kirkpatrick Lake, which some maps show tothis day.A point of interest, in the low land, about a mile east of the dam a sodhouse, barn and stock yard was built in about 1870.It served as a trading post and post office for that area.At this point is thestart of the Deadwood Trail which leads north to Deadwood, South Dakota, also from this point a trail leads off to the south-west which isthe cargo trail to Gering, Ne.This trail served the Gering area beforethe South Pacific Railroad was built. It was this type of history which Ray loved and he loved to tell anyone who would listen.He was wellknown for collecting and reading Zane Grey books.Through out the yearsRay developed Arthritis an by the time he was in his 50's he suffereda great deal, the arm which was injured in World War II also gave himmuch pain.In 1960, he took his life.The mechanic which taught Ray (Bud) in 1917, was Walter or Walt Stevens, who ran the Sprague Garage for63 years.
