Lawrence Frederick Lampe, Sr.

From Dan Alatorre, his grandson:

From the pictures you can see that he was VERY tall, and from some of the old portrait style photos of him, it is plain to see that he was a handsome young man.

Grandpa lived in Cincinnati, where he owned and operated the family business: Lampe Ice & Coal. In his early years, the delivery of coal was a necessity to heat northern homes in the freezing temperatures of Ohio winters. In summer, the delivery of ice into the family ice box would meanfood could be kept from spoiling for several days. With the advent of electric heating and air conditioners in post WWII America, and refrigerators and freezers becoming commonplace in the average home, he evertually retired from the business. Later in life, he became custodian for the church and school where his Lampe grandchildren attended, living in a house just next door to the school grounds. However, at its peak, the ice and coal business was a solid way to provide for a young family.

Growing up in and around the business, Vivian knew all sorts of thingsabout coal: the various types, what temperatures they burned at, and how completely black you would get working with it or playing around it. She also helped keep the books of the business.

A typical winter coal delivery would involve the coal truck pulling up to the house, and the house's exterior coal bin door being opened. Uncommon today, these 2x2 square metaldoors were located next to the front door of older houses, and usually next to the front steps. In the basement, a coal bin or coal room was on the receiving end of the delivery. Once terms of the delivery were set, the chute was aligned from the truck to the coal bin door, and the mini avalanche was started. A rumble of black rocks and dust rolled down the wooden chute until the proper amount ofcoal was delivered. The finale was a quick sweep of the chute, and a wave goodbye until next week's delivery.

Ice deliveries in summer also provided a special treat.Besides allowing for cold drinks, ice chips were a delicacy. It is hard for us to imagine now, but in the scorching, humid heat along the Ohio river valley, prior to central air conditioning, summerswere tough. I poor kid could get a lot of refreshment from an ice chip from the ice truck on a hot summer day. They were treats. Big arms wielding giant tongs would haul the huge slabs of ice into thetruck, where they would be cut into blocks for the receiving family's ice box. The chips created by the cutting were a free treat to good kids along the route, and an extra perk for Lawrence's kids as they helped.

Grandpa's manner was soft spoken and polite. I do not remember him ever raising his voice, but since I was one of his (many) granchildren, maybe that isnot an unusual memory. His children may remember things differently. An avid card player, family get-togethers arrely involved alcoholic drinks but almost always involved several games of cards. It is unusual to be a Lampe from that generation or the next, and not play cards.

Being from the generation that came of age in the Great Depression, grandpa was an economicalsort. Mom used to say that if you gave grandpa an apple, all you would get back was a stem and a handful of seeds. Grandpa was thin, but he ate. Again, folks from the Depression didn't waste things like food, and he learned to like things like ox tail, pigs feet, blood soup... things that we don't eat a lot of these days.

Grandpa died one summer a few weeks afterhe had broken his hip picking apples. At 84, he was still inclined to get out his ladder and pick the apples in his back yard when they were ripe. That particular summer, he fell out of the tree. On his last night, he had some trouble sleeping and complained of a shortness of breath. He passed away in his sleep.

An appropriate farewell for a quiet, robust man.
