Life stories: Betty Kimball posted July 30, 2003 Columbia Missourian After Betty Kimball moved to Columbia following her husband?s death in 1980, she kept herself busy. ?Her big thing was getting out and volunteering,? said her son, Scott Long. Mrs. Kimball took care of her mother, volunteered at the hospitals, ushered at theater events and helped organize a support group for widowed adults at the Columbia Senior Center. Betty Francis Kimball died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at her home in Columbia. She was 77. Mrs. Kimball was born July 25, 1926, in Moberly to Arthur T. Marriott and Coral Veva Jett. She was a homemaker who volunteered in Kansas City and Columbia. Long said his mother would reach out to anyone. Mrs. Kimball often gave a blind man from the center a ride to his weekly haircut. ?She saw all people as equal,? Long said. ?She worked putting people together so they could see the best in themselves.? Millie Westling McGowan, who volunteered with Mrs. Kimball at University Hospital, said Mrs. Kimball organized card parties to raise funds for the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity. McGowan said Mrs. Kimball loved to play bridge. ?She liked to win,? McGowan said. McGowan and other friends celebrated at Mrs. Kimball?s birthday party Friday night. She said it was a chance to say goodbye to her dear friend who was battling cancer. McGowan told Mrs. Kimball that she would see her in heaven, where they could start a new bridge game. ?And I will promise to play a better game of bridge up there,? Mrs. Kimball told McGowan. It was the last thing she would say to her friend. ?The world would be a better kind of place if we had more Betty Kimballs,? McGowan said. Mary Nell Porter said it was always fun to travel with Mrs. Kimball. ?When we went on a train trip, she met everybody on the train,? Porter said. She remembered the time they met Max Baer, who played Jethro on ?The Beverly Hillbillies? on one trip. Porter said Mrs. Kimball was a very energetic and caring person. ?She always had a sixth sense of knowing when people were down,? Porter said. ?She could always find some means of helping people out.? Emily Smith, volunteer coordinator for University Hospital and Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, said the hospital has lost a friend. Mrs. Kimball served the hospital for more than 12 years at the surgery information desk. She was the line of communication between the operating room and families. ?She was interested in you as a person,? Smith said. ?She loved life.? Mrs. Kimball is survived by three sons, Scott Long of Broken Arrow, Okla., Dan Kimball of Kirkwood, and Robert Schneible of Apache Junction, Ariz.; two daughters, Elyse Ashley of Asheville, N.C., and Debbie Kirkpatrick of Kansas City; a brother, Arthur Edwin Marriott of Loganville, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, two of whom live in Columbia, Brett Kirkpatrick and Jill Ashley, and two great-grandchildren. Her parents and her husband, Harvey Douglas Kimball, died earlier. ?She touched a lot of hearts,? said Elyse Ashley of her mother. Ashley said that last week, John Fussner, a hospice chaplain, brought by a basket full of plants for Mrs. Kimball?s birthday. Mrs. Kimball had delivered a basket to Fussner to welcome him to Columbia more than 20 years ago. Fussner offered to preach at Mrs. Kimball?s funeral without the family asking, something he had never offered to do before. When the family found out Mrs. Kimball?s pastor would be out of town, they took Fussner?s offer. Services, conducted by the Rev. Fussner, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, 16 Hitt St. Memorials may be sent to Option Care Missouri River Hospice, 3210 Bluff Creek Drive, Columbia, Mo. 65201, or Camp Hickory Hill, 5951 W.
