A JOHN applied for a pension for serving in the Revolution on May 8, 1833 in Pendleton Co. He was 73 years old and had joined in 1776 in Frederick Co, Md in Col Smallwood's Reg for 3 years. Served till the spring of 1779 when a substitute was found. Family moved to Shenadoah Valley shortly after. Dec 1780, drafted again. Served at Yorktown. /818704

WIFE: MORTON gives MARY MAGDALENA SIMMONS, daughter of GEO SIMMONS and a May 28, 1810 deed gives MARY. However, three of his sons' deaths (HEN, JACOB & SAM,) give their mother as CATHERINE. JEFF CARR feels that the 1810 deed is for another JOHN. My only reasoning for thinking that it was this JOHN was due to my notes from the "land books". "JOHN OF HEN" was listed with various tracts and at the end I had added an 85 acre tract. I may have attached it only because it was in the same district. Will have to recheck. GEO SIMMONS also names his daughter MAGDALENA in his 1810 will so she could not have died before 1800 for JOHN to have remarried a CATHERINE.
JEFF CARR further gives his wife CATH as being the widow of his brother FRED. He bases this theory on the fact that a widow is not mentioned which would indicate her prior death or remarriage. If she had died, there should have been a court order to place their daughter SALLY, but there is none. Therefore he assumes that she was remarried and since JOHN appears with a wife CATH about this time, it is logical to assume that it is her.
