Obituary: Fergus Falls Daily Journal, Saturday April 18, 1942, MRS.TOMHAVE, BELOVED WIFE, MOTHER CALLED, SUFFERED INJURIES IN CYCLONE OF1919 IN WHICH HER DAUGHTER WAS KILLED Mrs. John J. Tomhave passed away at her home at 321 E. Beech Ave., onFriday, April 17 at 4 o'clock in the morning. For the last who weeksshe was confined to her bed and during the last few days sufferedconsiderable pain. Her husband and some of her daughters were with herconstantly during the last week doing for her everything that humanhands can do. She was suffering from heart and liver trouble andcomplications due to old age. She attained the age of 87 years, 5months and 21 days. She will be greatly missed by her aged husband towhom she was a faithful wife for over 57 years and by her children andnumerous other relatives who held her in high esteem. Mrs. Tomhaveenjoyed good health in her long life, but has been ailing during thelast two years. She was severely injured in the cyclone in 1919 whenthe house on Broadway in which her family lived at that time wasdestroyed by the storm. One daughter, Mrs. Clara Kenitzer who wasvisiting at her house at the time, lost her life then. Mrs. Tomhavehad a large number of friends in this community and was respected andbeloved by all because of her kindliness and her devout Christianspirit. She was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran church of thiscity. Mrs. Tomhave's maiden name was Caroline Schmidt. She was the daughterof Ludwig Schmidt and his wife, Johanna nee Duenow. She was born atKuelz near Naugart in Pomerania, Germany, on Oct. 26, 1854. In 1884with her parents and her brother, William she cam to this countryarriving at Fergus Falls on April 28. They settled on a farm inElizabeth township. On Oct. 7, 1884 she was united in marriage withJohn J. Tomhave. Their married life was very happy and they wereprivileged to celebrate their golden wedding 8 years ago. The youngcouple made their home on Mr. Tomhave's farm in Carlisle townshipwhere they lived until 1918 when they retired from farming and movedto this city. They lived at first on Broadway. When their home wasdestroyed in the cyclone in 1919 they lived for a year on their farmin Fergus Falls township, then bought the house on Beech Ave., wherethey have had their home ever since. Two sisters who died in Germany before the family emigrated to thiscountry have preceded her in death as also 2 brothers, William andHerman Schmidt, who were well known in this community. One daughter,Mrs. Clara Kenitzer, died in 1919 and one son, John Tomhave in 1925.She is survived by her husband and the following sons and daughters:Louis Tomhave of Fergus Falls township, Mrs. Marle Schuetze of Orwell,Mrs. Emily Bjerkness of this city, Mrs. Bertha Pergande of Carlisle,Albert Tomhave of Seattle, Wash. There are 23 grandchildren and 13great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Trinity Lutheran church of thiscity on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. W. Friedrich officiating.Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery.
