John Keller worked as a Farmer most of his life, living on a small farm near his father. He lived around Plesant and Bellair Townships inAppanoose County. He came to Iowa with his parents, brother, andsister from Virginia when he was about 14 yr. old. They took a trainup to Wheeling, Virginia, then took a steamboat from there toCincinnati, Ohio, to St. Louis, Missouri, on to Keokuk, Iowa wherethey spent about two weeks. They went on about 25 miles, then stayedawhile until the Coleria broke out. They drove on up to Croydon with ateam. They stayed overnight then went back to Unionville the nextmorning with a man that was going to Keokuk for a load of goods forthe first store in Croydon. They were unloaded at Unionville under abig Oak tree. They left in the afternoon and got a house on JohnWhite's place. They stayed there until about the end of August thenmoved about 2 miles west and bought a farm. They lived there by theShoal Creek one year, living on wild turkey and rabbit. Their fathergot some homestead land where they built a cabin to live in. Theylanded in Keokuk, Iowa on May 15, 1854.
