Obituary Published in the Longmont Ledger Obituary: Elma Irene (Teter) Phillips January 22, 2010 by Longmont Ledger Phillips E lma Irene (Teter) Phillips died Jan. 15, 2010. She was 76. Elma was born December 23, 1918 in Frontier County, Nebraska, to OtisEarl and Irene (Mayo) Teter and grew up on the family farm nearBartley, Nebraska. She graduated valedictorian from Bartley HighSchool at the young age of 16 and then taught in a one room countyschool. She married Earl Thomas Phillips on December 20, 1942 and theyfarmed near Cambridge, Nebraska. Upon having kids Elma became a homemaker and a part time farmhandbefore returning to work, this time as a wallpaper hanger andeventually back to teaching school in Bartley. In 1963 the family leftthe farm and relocated to Longmont. Elma earned both BS (1967) andMasters degrees in Education from the University of Colorado. She wenton to teach elementary school in Longmont for 20 years. After retirement in 1987, Elma was finally able to pursue a long-timepassion of making quilts and traveling. Elma, like Earl, was alwayswilling to help others. After she retired, she spent time reading tofriends who could no longer see to read, volunteered for churchactivities, served in Eastern Star (she was a 50-year member), andhelped her children and grandchildren whenever the need arose. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, PaulinePhillips, and one son William Phillips. She is survived by her husband, Earl, William’s widow Carol ofLongmont, sons Gerry (Gloria) of Louisville, John (Jerilyn) ofLittleton, Scott (Sondra) of Longmont, and daughter Phyllis (John)Bruce of Johnstown. She has nine grandchildren-Andrew Phillips, Holly(Nick) Slater, Todd Phillips, Chris Phillips, Leilani (Brett) Borstad,Jennifer Bruce, Robert Bruce, Ivan Phillips, and Adam Phillips. Shehas three great-grandchildren-Sophia and Matthew Phillips and RyleiMaher, and two brothers, Don and John Teter. Loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, andbaker-Elma was loved by all, and will be greatly missed. Memorialservices have been held and were entrusted to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association inc/o Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
