Biography by Professor Joseph M. Kellogg Samuel Teter was born in 1772, on the farm in Germany valley. Hefirst appears for himself as a taxable head of a family on thePersonal Tax lists of Pendleton County in 1793, and continues toappear every year from that date until 1815, and probably later (listswere not copied after that date). He appears on the federal Censusfor 1810 (with himself and his wife as being between 26 and 45 yearsof age, and two children, one son and one daughter, both between 10and 16 years). In the census of 1820 he appears (with himself andwife now over 45 years, and only the one child, a son of 10 to 16. Inthe Census of 1830 he appears (with himself as now of age 50 to 60,and wife however of 60 to 70, one other male of 20 to 30, another of10 to 15, and one female of 5 to 10. Samuel Teter was confirmed, Oct. 16, 1789, by his cousin, the Rev.Paul Henkel. Samuel Teter appears on a muster roll of militia in Capt. WilliamGragg's County of Pendleton County, on Sept. 6, 1794 (Morton's Hist.of Pendleton, page 400); and he voted at the elections of 1797 and1801 (Pendleton County election polls). On June 27, 1797, Samuel Teter located 75 acres on the west side ofthe North Fork Mountain, joining his own and Johnson Phares' land, byvirtue of a warrant to Joseph Henkel dated March 8, 1797 (PendletonCounty Location book 1, page 98). He had this tract surveyed on July10, 1797 (Survey book A, page 83). On Feb. 4, 1800, he also located14 acres on the east side of the North Fork. (Location book 1. page111) and had this surveyed on Feb. 15, 1800. It was adjoining andbetween his own, Conrad's, and his fathers lands (Survey book A, page147). He patented this land on Dec. 29, 1801 (Virginia Land patentsbook #48, page 316). On July 6, 1813, Jacob Shoulders and wifeSusannah deeded to Samuel Teter, for $200.00, 92 acres of land, whichwas part of a tract of 140 acres granted to George Teter by patent ofdate June 18, 1792, the north end of the same. Recorded same date.(Pendleton deed book #4, page 454). In the meantime, on July 5, 1803,he, with his wife Catherine, had deeded to Jacob Conrad Jr., for 159pounds, two tracts of land on the west side of North Fork mountain, between Conrad's and Phares' land, the first having been a part of atract of 357 acres granted to Andrew Johnson on March 1, 1773 (thiswas of 120 acres), and the second, of 34 acres, had been granted tohis father Philip Teter by patent of date Feb. 9, 1782. Recorded samedate. (Pendleton deed book #3, page 498). On July 2, 1803, he bought from John Mitchell and wife Margaret, forone thousand dollars, 2 tracts on the west side of the North Fork, adjoining Conrad's and Philip Harper's "at the foot of a high hill, opposite the mouth of Deep Spring," 72 acres in all. Recorded July 5,1803. (Pendleton deed book 3, page 495. See original deed in theMitchell genealogy). And on Aug. 13, 1816 Samuel Teter and wife Catherine together with theother heirs of Christopher Huffman, (Catherine, the wife of Samuel wasa daughter of this Christopher Huffman), made a deed to Michael Carrof Hardy County of several tracts of land in Hardy County (detailsgiven under account of John Teter #18). Recorded August 10, 1817.(from Hardy County deed book #7, page 751). On Sept. 16, 1830, Moses Teter and wife Elizabeth deeded to SamuelTeter, for $6000, a tract of 76 acres on the east side of the NorthFork, between other land of Samuel Teter and that of Joseph Lantz, itbeing part of 2 tracts (1 of 118 acres and the other of 95 acres)patent lands formerly belonging to their father Philip Teter(Pendleton Deed book 10, page 217). On Jan. 1, 1835, Samuel Teter and wife Catherine deeded to BarnetRaines, for $250 a tract of 92 acres on the west side of North ForkTimber Hill, being the greater part of 140 acres granted to GeorgeTeter by patent dated June 13, 1792. Recorded April 22, 1835 (same,Book 11, page 283). Signature to this deed. [omitted] Samuel Teter was the Executor of his father Philip Teter's estate.(will of Philip recorded Jan. 2, 1816. Pendleton will book #4, page3). The will of Samuel Teter himself is dated March 31, 1841, but it isnot recorded until Jan. 6, 1848. It would seem probable thereforethat Samuel died toward the end of 1847. (In Mortons history it wassaid that some say he went over to Germany and died over there). Inthis will he leaves legacies to his nephews: to Reuben Teter, son ofJoel, "the Hill place I now live on"; to Cornelius Helmick, son of hissister Hannah (Teter) Helmick, "my river place on which he now lives".Then he leaves the balance of his estate in three parts, 1st to hisbrother Joel Teter, 2nd his brother Jonathan Teter, and 3rd to four of"brother Moses" boys" - Elias, Henry, Samuel and Joshua. (Moses Teterhimself is mentioned as being dead). Reuben Teter was appointedExecutor. Witnesses were Adam Helmick and Joseph Lantz Senior. (PendletonCounty will book #4, page 280). From the lack of any mention of anywife or children it would seem that both wife and children (if he everhad any) were dead. Samuel Teter married, about 1792-3 Catherine Hoffman, daughter ofChristopher Hoffman of Hardy County, and sister of the Ursula Hoffmanwho married his brother John Teter. She was born before 1770 (asshown on census of 1850) and died probably some time between 1835 and1841.
