Biography by Professor Joseph M. Kellogg John Teter was born in 1770. He first appears as signer, with hisfather Philip Teter, of the petition dated Oct. 19, 1787, asking forthe formation of the new county. As a young man he was an officer inthe county militia. At a court (for Pendleton County) on July 2,1788, it was ordered that Thomas Gelaspy be recommended for Lieutenantin the room of John Teters who refused to serve. This refusal was buttemporary, however, for on Jan. 3, 1789, John Teter was recommendedfor Lieutenant in the lower company of the North Fork. (PendletonCounty Court Minute book). On Jan. 5, 1795, John Teter was madeoverseer of roads in place of John Shall. In the Personal Tax listsfor Pendleton County he appears first separately in 1792, andcontinues to appear until 1797. "Johannes" Dieter was confirmed, Oct. 16, 1789, by his cousin, theRev. Paul Henkel. About that time, 1797, John Teter removed to Illinois, most probablywith Rev. David Badgley and his party. (see notes on Abraham Teter).John Teter voted at Cahokia, Illinois in 1799 (together with AbrahamTeter, Peter Mitchell, etc.). He came to St. Clair County, Illinois,in 1801-02, settling on a farm southwest of Belleville. He voted atan election in Belleville on Sept. 17, 1818, so he was living at thattime. The date of his death is not known. John Teter married, about 1792, Ursula Hoffman, the daughter ofChristopher Hoffman of Hardy County Hoffman lived on a tract of 186acres on the west side of the South branch. His death is recorded onthe death list of the old North Mill creek church in (now) GrantCounty He died Oct. 31, 1796, and is said to have been born in 1733.Another daughter of Christopher Hoffman, named Mary, married WilliamMiller, and the Millers also went to Illinois in the Badgley party.Other daughters also married into the Teter family. On the records ofHardy County is a deed dated Aug. 13, 1816, made by Leonard Hoffman,Jacob Huffman, Peter Huffman Daniel Huffman, John Teter and Ursula hiswife, Samuel Teter and Catherine his wife (called "Caty"), and WilliamMiller and Mary his wife, "which said Leonard, Jacob, Peter, Daniel,Ursulla, Caty and Mary are children and legal representatives ofChristopher Huffman deceased." It is stated that Barbara, wife ofPeter Huffman and Rosanna, wife of Daniel Huffman join in the deed.Also that Leonard and Peter and his wife Rosanna are of the state ofOhio, and John Teter and his wife, and William Miller and his wife areof the Illinois Territory, while Jacob Huffman and Samuel Teter andhis wife are of Pendleton County They together make this deed, for aconsideration of $3333.50, of 140 acres of land in the South branchmanor which had been granted by Fairfax to Christopher Huffman on Aug.3, 1773, and quit claimed to Hoffman by John Marshall on May 1, 1807;also another tract of 22 acres, and several other tracts, comprisingin all about 224 acres. Of the signers, John and Samuel Teter bothsigned it but their wives Ursula and Caty made their marks. RecordedAugust 10, 1817. (Hardy County Deed book #7, page 751). Deed toMichael Carr. On April 13, 1824, a similar deed for several more tracts in the southbranch manor, this time to Michael Carr also, is made by John Teterand Ursulla his wife, William Miller and Mary his wife, LeonardHoffman, Peter Hoffman and Barbara his wife. Peter Huffman and wifeBarbara are said to be of Greene County, Ohio, and John Teter andUrsulla of St. Clair County, Illinois. Recorded July 13, 1824.(Hardy County Deed book, #9, page 402). The records of Rev John Caspar Stoever show the baptism of "JohnChristoph Hofman" son of Christoph Hofman, on April 28, 1734. Thiswas at Lancaster, Pennsylvania The child was born Feb. 21, 1734.Sponsors: Anastonia Uhler and Christina Ziegler. The following marriage records in St. Clair County, Illinois probablyare of children of this John Teter: Magdalen Teter and George Swiggart, April 5, 1829. Solomon Teeter and Diadema Aikman, Oct. 22, 1829. [s/o George ofPaul] Elizabeth Teter and Mansfield Hatfield, May 12, 1831. Simeon Teter and Martha McClane, April 2, 1835. [s/o Reuben] Catherine Teter and Jacob Yeager, June 21, 1838. Annie Teter and Levi Cox, Jan. 8, 1841. [widow of Levi] Susannah Teter and John N. Small, Apr. 25, 1844. [d/o Reuben] Zebedu Teter and Elizabeth Stout, Aug. 23, 1844. [s/o Reuben] Meshach Teter and Sarah Ann Orvings, Oct. 10, 1844. [s/o Reuben] John Teter was one of those who signed petitions or Memorials toCongress from Randolph and St. Clair County's, Indiana Territoryduring the years 1805-1809. His name appears among the signers of theone dated Dec. 2, 1805, complaining about the sale of the PublicLands, also one dated April 6, 1808, regarding the importance of aseparate government on the banks of the Mississippi. (hisbrother-in-law William Miller's name is next to his on thispetition.), also one dated Sept. 15, 1808 (at "Illinois") asking forPreemption rights on their land. (Territorial Papers of the U.S., vol7, Indiana Territory, pages 319, 553, 593). William Miller alsosigned a number of these Petitions.
