Biography by Professor Joseph M. Kellogg Joel Teter was born November 16, 1778, (Morton's History of PendletonCounty). He appears on the Personal Tax lists for a number of yearsbeginning in 1801, but apparently lived in another neighborhood fromthe other Teters, since his name appears in another captain'sdistrict. On the Census of 1810 he appears (with himself and wife ofage 26 to 45 years, 5 male children under 10 yrs. and 1 female childunder 10 yrs.) In the Census of 1820 he appears (with himself andwife, 6 sons and 2 daughters). In the Census of 1830 he appears withhimself and wife now of age 40 to 50, 3 sons (others appearseparately), and 2 daughters (but 1 of these is so young (of 5 to 10yrs.) that she is not one of those who appeared on the previous censusand one of those who did is not now present, having either died ormarried). In the Census of 1850, Joel Teter appears as of age 71,with wife Elizabeth aged 64, (and a Johnson Bland living with themaged 21). Joel Teter married in Pendleton County, on February 8, 1800, ElizabethPhares (Morton). She was born in 1784 and was the daughter of JohnsonPhares and his wife Sarah. On March 6, 1833 the heirs of Johnson Phares made a deed to JoelTeter, for $600, a tract of land "in fals gap," "what it may."Recorded August 7, 1833. The heirs of Johnson Phares making the deedare said to be: Solomon Phares and Elizabeth his wife, Elijah Pharesand wife Elizabeth, Uriah Phares and wife Barbara, Robert Phares andwife Susanna, Ambrose Phares and wife Catharine, Isaac Phares and wifeDelilah, Nathan Strothers and wife Rebecca (all there of PendletonCounty), and Reuben Teter and wife Christina of Randolph County, andSaul Bland and wife Abigail, and Robert P. Minnis and wife Mary.(these last of Greene County, Ohio). The money, six hundred dollarsis said to have been paid by Joel Teter to Johnson Phares deceased.The latter died intestate and the land descended to these heirs andalso Elizabeth Teter, wife of Joel, and the heirs of Sarah Teterdeceased who was the wife of Moses Teter, these two also beingdaughters of Johnson Phares. (Pendleton Deed book 11, page 11). The will of Sarah Phares is dated May 16, 1840. In it she mentionsher daughter Rebecca Strawder and the latter's children William, andSarah, Isaac, Abigail and Mary; also her daughter Elizabeth Teter, sonAmbrose Phares, daughters Abigail Bland, Mary Minnis, son IsaacPhares, etc. She appoints Joel Teter as Executor. Witnesses wereSamuel Allenbaugh, Reuben and Isaac Teter. Recorded October 7, 1841(Pendleton Will book 4. page 211). The death records of Pendleton County show that Joel Teter died March30, 1858, of dropsy, aged 79 years, 4 mo. 14 days. His widowElizabeth Teter died in 1869 (no month or day given), of old age, aged85 years. The will of Joel Teter is dated December 26, 1855. Recorded April 8,1858. In it he leaves to his son Isaac "the home place on which I nowlive." "As to my sons Philip, Solomon, Johnson, Reuben, and Enoch,they have received their portion in land" etc. He also mentionsdaughters Elizabeth and Mary, granddaughter Jane Bland. His wife isto be provided for by son Isaac, whom he appoints as Sole Executor.The witnesses were Jesse Waybright, George Lambert and Solomon Warner.(Pendleton Will book No. 4, page 375). 2. 1810 Census, Pendleton County, Virginia The head of household is Joel Teter. There are eight people in thehousehold. There are five white males less than 10 years of age, onewhite male aged 26 to 44 years, one white female less than 10 years ofage, and one white female aged 26 to 44 years. There are no slavesnor other persons in the household. Columns are headed as follows: 1. Free white males 0-9 years of age 2. Free white males 10 -15 years of age 3. Free white males 16 -25 years of age including heads of families 4. Free white males 26 -44 years of age including heads of families 5. Free white males 45 years and older, including heads of families 6. Free white females 0-9 years of age 7. Free white females 10 -15 years of age 8. Free white females 16 -25 years of age including heads of families 9. Free white females 26 -44 years of age including heads of families A. Free white females 45 years and older, including heads of families B. All other free persons except indians not taxed. C. Slaves The five white males less than 10 years of age would be Philip,Solomon, Johnson, Reuben, and an unidentified person. The one white male 26 to 44 years of age would be Joel, the head ofhousehold. The one white female less than 10 years of age would be Naomi. The one white female 26 to 44 years of age would be Elizabeth, thewife of Joel. 3. 1820 Census, Pendleton County, Virginia The head of household is Joel Teter. There are ten people in thehousehold. There are two white males 10 years of age or less, twowhite male aged 10 to 15 years, two white males aged 16 to 25 years,one white male aged 26 to 45 years, one white female 10 years of ageor less, one white female aged 10 to 15 years, and one white femaleaged 26 to 45 years. Three members of the household are engaged inagriculture. There are no slaves nor other persons in the household. Columns are headed as follows: 1. Free white males under 10 years of age 2.
