Biography by Professor Joseph M. Kellogg George Teter was born at the family home on the North Fork inPendleton County, Sept. 9, 1784. He was the youngest son, andinherited the homestead property from his father. He was also willed"all the new lands adjoining the same both sides of the river", and, jointly with his brother Isaac, the lands in the Timber Hills, GeorgeTeter appears on the Personal Tax lists for Pendleton County for thefirst time in 1805, and continues on these lists until his removalfrom the county about 1840. On the Census of 1820 he appears (withhimself and wife of from 26 to 45 yrs., 4 sons under 16, and 3daughters under 16). In the Census for 1830 he also appears (withhimself and wife of 40 to 50 yrs., 5 sons under 15 and 2 others older(15 to 30), and 2 daughters under 20). In addition to the land he received from his father, George Teterpatented and acquired by deed or otherwise much other land both inPendleton and in Randolph County. On May 6, 1800, he received patentfor 25 acres on the Timber ridge, on the waters of Ebermans andHedricks runs, extending to the top of the River hill. (from Virginialand patent Book #45, p. 454). On Oct. 26, 1819 he patented 185 acresadjoining his former land on the Timber Hill (same, book #68, p. 414).On the same date he also patented 100 acres on the east side ofTeters and Cunninghams survey on the Dry fork of the Cheat river inRandolph County (same, book #68, p. 416). On Nov. 18, 1834 hepatented 500 acres also on the Dry fork of Cheat. (same, book #84, p.120); and on Aug. 27, 1835, he patented another 500 acres on the westof the rich mountain adjoining the land of Joseph Walker, also on theDry fork (same, book #85, p. 260). On Aug. 26, 1811 he received bydeed from Robert Maxwell for 50 dollars, 62 acres also on the Dry forkin Randolph County (Randolph County deed book #6, p. 85): and on Aug.29, 1812, for 40 dollars, from James Cunningham of Hardy County, 100acres on the Dry fork next Jacob Shook (same, book #6, p. 217).Again, on April 4, 1815, he bought, for $80, from John Vance Junr. ofPendleton County, 383 acres in Randolph on the left hand prong of theSummerfield run water of the Dry fork of Cheat. (same, book #6, p.535). On Aug. 19, 1822, he bought from Jonas Green and wife Mary ofHardy County, for $500, 500 acres on the Dry fork, including the BigLimestone spring about 4 miles above the valley road (same, book #8,p. 403). On Oct. 31, 1823, from Robert Rains and wife Francis hebought, for, $120, 230 acres in Randolph on the Middle Mountainadjoining the survey of George Teter and Joseph Walker, on the watersof Gandys Creek (same, book #9, p. 46). On Dec. 4, 1823, George Teter received a deed for $20, from ValentineButcher and Margaret his wife (late Margaret Teter), of one moiety ofan undivided tract of land of 85 acres on a west branch of the Northfork called Rocky run, which land was granted to George Teter June 16,1792 and by said patentee, by last will and testament, devised to twoof his sons, viz. George Teter and Isaac Teter, and said Isaac dyingintestate, his moiey descended to his only daughter and heiress at lawMargaret Teter who has since intermarried with the above ValentineButcher, etc. etc. Recorded June 2, 1824. (Pendleton County deedbook #9, p. 11). This was signed by Valentine Butcher and "MaryanMargaret Butcher". Again, on April 1, 1824, Valentine Butcher andwife Margaret made another deed to George Teter, for $10, of theirmoiety in another tract of 25 acres in the Timber ridge, (undersimilar description etc.). Recorded June 2, 1824. (same book #9, p.13). This of course was the land which the father George willed toIsaac and George Jr. jointly. Perhaps the largest of George Teter's purchases of land was that ofdate April 25, 1835, for $1000 from Samuel Shortle and wife Elizabeth(this is his own daughter and her husband) of only 6 acres and 16poles on the west side of the North fork, the same which said Shortlehad bought from Jacob Conrad, lying between the land of George Teterand said Conrad, in the mouth of the Timber ridge run gap andextending across the river to the east side. (This would seem to havebeen quite valuable land from the price given.) Recorded May 27,1835. (Pendleton County Deed book #11, p. 288). George Teter had already begun to dispose of some of his land holdingshowever. On Sept. 12, 1834, George Teter and Sarah his wife sold toGeorge Mallow, for $400, 2 tracts of land, one of 85 acres on theRocky run, and the other of 25 acres on the Timber ridge on the watersof Ebermans and Hedricks run. Recorded Sept. 12, 1834. (PendletonCounty deed book #11, p. 183). Then on April 23, 1840, he sold toIsaac Phares, for $800, two other tracts, one at the head of a smallbranch of the North fork by name of the Pound run, and the other onthe west side of his former land on the Timber ridge adjoining PaulTeter's land on the North Fork, both making 250 acres in all.Recorded same date. (same, book #13, p. 11) Then, on the same date,April 23, 1840, he also made a deed to Isaac Phares, for $1200, ofthat tract of 6 acres and 16 poles which he had bought from theShortles. Recorded same date. (same, book, #13, p. 14). Tracing of Signatures to this Deed. [omitted] On Oct. 15, 1840, he made another dead to Isaac Phares, for $2000, ofa tract of 165 acres on the North Fork, "adjoining and above theTanyard tract". It included parts of 3 tracts as follows; 1st, the120 acres granted by patent to George Teter Sr. on March 1, 1773 (thiswas the original homestead tract); 2nd, the 80 acres patented on April17, 1798; 3rd the 35 acres patented March 7, 1795. Recorded Dec. 9,1841. (Pendleton County Deed book 13, p. 289). The disposal of this property evidently was in preparation for hisremoval from Pendleton County (Probably the land in Randolph Countywas sold about this time also). Soon after, George Teter seems tohave removed, with all his family, and to have settled in Indiana, near the present town of Tipton. The settlement around this place waslater called Tetersburg. Here, near Tipton, Indiana, George Teter died on Sept. 30, 1855.Probably his will is on record there. George Teter appears on theCensus of 1850 in Jefferson township of Tipton County, Indiana, withhimself of age 65, wife Sarah aged 65, and son Mahlon aged 21. He hadland valued at $2000. Other children appear separately. George Teter had married, in Pendleton County, June 15, 1805 SarahHarper, the daughter of Jacob Harper and his wife Margaret Simmons.Sarah was born in Pendleton County Sept. 29, 1784, and died at Tiptonor Tetersburg, Indiana, April 3, 1854. Jacob Harper was the son ofPhilip Harper, the original settler there on the North Fork. MaryHarper, the twin sister of Sarah, married Abraham Henkel and removedwith him to Iowa. Birth Date Conflicts George Teter, born 9 September 1784, Macksville, Pendleton County,Virginia, occupation, farmer, married on 15 June 1805 in PendletonCounty, Virginia, Sarah Margaret Harper, born 29 September 1784,Pendleton County, Virginia [daughter of Jacob Harper and MargaretSimmons], twin to Mary Harper, died 3 April 1854, Tipton County,Indiana, burial: Tetersburg Cemetery, Tipton, Indiana. George died 30September 1855, Tetersburg, Tipton, Indiana, Burial: TetersburgCemetery, Tipton, Indiana. He Moved to Tipton County, Indiana in1840. He Sold all his property in Pendleton County to Isaac Phares on12 October 1840. The 1883 History of Tipton County, Indiana givesdate of death as 9 September 1855. See page 410. In 1840 he moved toHamilton County, Indiana, and then moved to Tipton. The 1883 Historyof Tipton County, Indiana, page 410, gives his date of death as 9September 1855. According to the 1850 United States Census, his ageis 65. Birth date confusion: One source says September 9, 1784, and othersays September 9, 1764: I have chosen to use the date of September 9,1784 as his birth, as it works with the age stated for the 1850 censusand is more realistic given life expectancies of the day. Also, PaulTeter, his brother, born about 1767, is noted as the eldest son in aproperty record showing the will of land from their father to Paul.Furthermore, this seems to be the date used in published histories ofthe family. 1810 Census, Pendleton County, Virginia The head of household is George Teter.
