Christoph Carl Koertge (1812-1871) was the son of teacherLud

ewigChristoph Koertge (1774-1841) and Margaretha Elisabeth Flemming(1776-1843). Carl was born in the town of Letzlingen, which isnorthwest of Magdeburg, Prussia, and died of tuberculosis in Ric

hlandCounty, Illinois. Carl's siblings included tailor Ludewig GottfriedAndreas Koertge of Neuhaldensleben; Margaretha Elisabeth Koertge Bauerof Letzlingen; Heinrich Carl Keortge, a teacher i

n Klueden; andFriedrich Wilhelm Koertge, who taught in Schaafdorf.
On December 1, 1837, Carl married Anna Dorothea Elisabeth Schmidt(1821-1890) of Letzlingen. Dorothea was the daughter

of landowner andlinenweaver Johann Friederich Christoph Schmidt (1785-1821) and hiswife, Anna Elisabeth Michaelis. Elisabeth was a recent widow ashusband Christoph, died just ten days before Do

rothea's birth.
Following marriage, Carl and Dorothea settled in the nearby villageof Salchau where Carl was a property owner. About 1937 Hitlerleveledthe village of Salchau in ord

er to make room for target practice.Seventeen Koertge children were born in Salchau and five died there,none living more that three months. They werea stillborn son (1857),his twin brother Her

rmann Ludewig, a second Herrmann Ludewig (1858),Minna Emma Juliane (1859-1860), and Marie Friederike (1863). TheKoertge children were baptizedin the Lutheran faith, and Carl andDorothea's fi

rst nine children were confirmed before leaving Prussia.In America many family members joined the West Salem Moravian Church,and Carl andDorothea are buried in the old section of the MoravianCe

metery.
In 1867 their son Christoph Heinrich Herrmann, left for America.Henry's main reason for leaving Prussia was toavoid military service.The following year, Carl and Dorothea, a

long with ten of theirchildren, their daughter-in-law, Elisabeth, and three grandchildren,followed Henry to Illinois. Setting sail from Bremen, they arrived inAmerica approximately four weeks l

ater. The trip was arduous, andmany became seasick. It was necessary for each family to bringprovisions for theirvoyage. Accompanying the Koertges on theirvoyage were Frederich Hasslinger an

d several members of the Gadau andKnackmus families.
After landing in New York City, the group boardeda train forOlney, arriving in Illinois in early December. For a short while theKoert

ges stayed with the Schmidt family of Edwards County. Then onthe 28th of December in 1868 Carl and Dorothea purchased 72 acres ofland in Bopas Township of Richland County. This land was purcha

sedfrom Henry C. and Irena Harrison Ridgely at a cost of $1,080. Thefarm was located four andone-half miles northwest of West Salem.
Carl Friedrich Koertge (1838-1890) was the oldest o

f theirseventeen children. While in Salchau, he married Maria DorotheaElisabeth Ebeling (1839-1908). Elisabeth was the daughter of JohannJoachim Ebeling and Christine Wilhelmina Dorothea Horn.

Two of Karland Elisabeth's six children were born in Salchau. They wereFriedrich Wilhelm Karl (1866-1880) and Marie Dorothea Elisabeth "Mary"Koertge Libke Ruby (1868-1944).

Maria Dorothea Elisabeth (1840-1912), Carl and Dorothea'a Eldestdaughter, married John Heinrich Genze (1834-1919), a native ofTheerhuette. Henry Gentz's parents were landowner Heinric

h Genze andDorothea Elisabeth Gadau Genze Luthe. In 1875 Dorothy, Henry, andfour of their children joined Dorothea's family in Illinios. Thechildren that journeyed to America were Marie Do

rothee Elisabeth(1866-1881), Emma Louise Auguste "Lucy" Gentz Canley Gadau(1868-1958), Karl Friedrich Wilhelm "Charles" (1872-1937), and AugustaD. E. Gentz Feldman (1875-1963).

Infants Friedrich Karl Heinrich(1864) and Anna MarieFriederike (1871) died in Prussia. Twoadditional daughters were born in Illinois.
Minna Elisabeth (1842-1936) traveled to America

with her parentsand her young son, Heinrich KarlWilhelm "Charles" (1865-1954).Elisabeth married George Eyer (1832-1908), the son of George JacobEyer and Mary Anna Bradle. George was

a widower with several smallchildren. Elisabeth and George had eight children of their own. Theirson Fredrick (1872-1893), was killed in a dynamite explosion.
Friedrich Heinrich (1844-18

96) was married four times. Littleisknown about Fred's first wife, Elizabeth Slunaker (1852-1872),daughter of Peter Slunaker and Barbara Gertsch. His second wife wasMary Ramsey Luthe (1853

-1881). Mary was the daughter of James andNancy Ramsey and the widow of Friedrich Wilhelm Luthe. FollowingMary's death, Fred marred for a third time in September of 1881. Hisbride Marie K

aroline Friederike Luthe was born in Letzlingen in 1864.She was the daughter of Christian Heinrich Luthe and Maria DorotheaSchackel and a sister of Friedrich Wilhelm Luthe. Mary was very younga

nd didn't like living away from home. This marriage ended indivorce. In May of 1884 Fred married Lydia Rachel Weber (1860-1915),daughter of Mathias Weber and Elizabeth Ely. Eight children

were bornto this final marriage. Several of these children settled in TheDalles, Oregon.
Heinrich Christoph Wilhelm Koertge (1845-1898) was the fifth childof Carl and Dorothea. Willia

mmarried Caroline Feutz (1850-1922),daughter of Ulrich and Catherine Feutz. Although William and Carolinewere parents of five children, none survived to adulthood. The familyis buried in Linde

n Lawn Cemetery in Richland County.
Maria Friederike Louise (1847-1927), better known as Lucy, marriedFriedrich Wilhelm Janeke (1843-1924) in 1870. He was the son ofproperty owner

>Johann Heinrich Janecke I and Anna Dorothea Elisabeth Weinberg ofLetzlingen. The Yonaka family arrived in Richland County in 1853.Fred and Lucy had six children, all born in Illinois. In 1990

theiryoungest daughter, Dora Yonaka Jones Stremme, was the last survivinggrandchild of Carl and Dorothea Koertge.
Christoph Heinrich Herrman Koertge (1846-1917), thefirst tosettle in A

merica, married Rosena Weiss (1848-1932), daughter ofConrad Wyss and Anna Barbara Burrie. Rosena and Henry had eightchildren who were born and raised in Richland County. Henry was afarmer and

a breeder of thoroughbred Shorthorn cattle.
Christoph Gottfried Kortge (1850-1929) was married twice. Hisfirst wife, Phillipina (1861-1880), was the daughter Peter Scherer andHarriet A

rnold Scherer Gadau. In 1880 Phoebe and their youngdaughter, Harriet (1879-1880), died of lung fever. Following theirdeaths, Chris married Phoebe's sister, Anna (1865-1942). Chris andAnna

had ten children. Sons, George Albert (1881-1882) and OttoChristopher (1893), are buried in Scherer Cemetery in Richland County.Shortly after theturn of the century, the Chris Kortge family l

eftRichland County and settled in Knox County, Indiana. They remained inIndiana for about twenty years before moving to Walhalla, and laterMidland, Michigan.

852-1877) was born in Salchau, Prussia,made the arduous trip to America with his family, grew to manhood inthe Richland County area. He died at an early age and is buried inthe Moravian Cemetery
