1, submitted by Charles W. Heath citing Ancestral File-1991 ed. and provid
ing that Abigal is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery [this location has sin
ce been confirmed by Beatrice Sena Heath when she visited the gravesite wh
ich now has a "Pioneer" plaque affixed to the gravestone].

According to reference "Biography of Eliza Mac (sic) Powell," written by D
ora Gates Christensen as told to her by her grandmother, Susan Carter Heat
h: "Along with raising their family, my grandfather (James Harvey) Hea
th had two woman (sic) (wives) and the (police) officers were after the Po
lygamists (sic) so grandmother (Abigal Olmstead Holden Heath) being a seco
nd wife came and lived with my parents until her death in 1891."

The following was obtained from Steven Heath and transcribed by him someti
me in the 1960's from a manuscript told by Susan B. Walsh: "Biograp
hy of Abigail (sic) Olmstead (Holden)--1925: This is the story to
ld me by my grandmother Susan Carter Heath with whom (Abigal Olmstead) liv
ed for a number of years. Abigail (sic) Olmstead was born in Ohio near La
ke Erie, 25 Feb 1818. She was the daughter of Harvey and Margaret (sic) O
lmstead, the same Harvey Olstead (sic) that was captured by the British a
nd held prisoner (in the war of 1812--note added by Teri Popp). It is to
ld he and another Boy (sic), just meer (sic) boys, were taken prisoners, t
he British were afraid they would carry news back to the army, so they ke
pt them a long time and then they escaped. Abigail (sic) was married ve
ry young to a man named Weed. By him she had two children (sic) Joshua a
nd Mary Weed. He died and she married a man by the name of Williams. Th
ey never had any children and I do not know what became of him but later (
she) married Whiley (sic) Holden and to them were born four children, Joh
n, Martha, Catherin (sic) and Caroline. They heard of Joseph Smith and h
is strange doctrine in her home state and joined the church in its infanc
y. She went with the Saints to nauvoo (sic). They were there at the ti
me of the martyrdom of the prophet (Joseph Smith) and his brother Hyrum (S
mith). They were driven with these saints hither and suffered the privati
ons with the early church members. Grandmother Abigail (sic) was seal
ed to Whiley (sic) Holden and always went by that name even though she mar
ried later [this is confirmed by census records as Abigal used the name Ho
lden as late as 1880 when she was living with her daughter's family, Isa
ac and Martha Elizabeth [Holden] Cook in Sevier County, Utah--Teri Popp
]. She had her sister sealed to her first husband she hardly knew which o
ne she loved the better (this appears to be the records found in the LDS r
ecords for Eli Weed and Diantha Olmstead--Teri Popp). They went to Jacks
on County (sic) Missouri at Independence but through cruel treatment we
re finally forced to look to the far west for a place to make their hom
e. After they were driven from Missouri the saints after giving up the
ir homes and everything dear to them in the middle of winter (sic). Th
ey gathered at a place called Winter Quarters and from there formed compan
ies to go west to find a new home. She with her husband and six childr
en were ready to start with the first company led by Brigham Young. But b
efore the company left small pox broke out in the camp. The saints we
re so deprived of the necessary conveniences to handle the disease that ma
ny fell victims of the dreaded disease and died. Whiley (sic) Holden w
as (sic) who contracted the disease and died, also her oldest daughter Mar
y. She was left at Winter Quarters a widow with five small children, 2 co
ws a broken heart and a heavy burden to bare as were many of the other sai
nts. There was one man who lost his wife, (sic) his name was Reynold. Th
ey were left with him. He had a wagon and one oxen so when the second com
pany was forming it was decided to put her two cows with his oxen to dr
aw the wagon and she was to look after his children across the plains. C
an we imagine this sad little group in one of the wagons in a pioneer trai
n. (sic) As we read of the trails (sic) they encountered on the plains fr
om Indians and privations. But the Lord did bless them in many ways. A
nd while the two cows helped to draw them over the plains. (sic) Night a
nd Morning (sic) they gave the little group milk for their needs. If gran
dma (Susan Carter Heath) remembers right it was the Daniel Spencer Compan
y. They came in this company and arrived in Salt Lake City Sept. 20, 184
7. Grandma (not sure if this reference is to Abigal or Susan--Teri Pop
p) was a nurse or mid-wife as they were called in those days. That is h
ow she maintained her family as well as render service to the needy. S
he was a dear woman and everyone seemed to love her. She always look
ed on the cheerful side. The first fee years in the Salt Lake Valley we
re very trying ones for she (sic) through the plagues of grasshoppers a
nd crickets and many is the time she gathered Sego (sic) roots to help i
ke (sic) out a bare existence. Even at that the Lord was good to his peop
le and they always found some way through. In the year 1854 or 1855 she m
arried my great-grand father (sic) James Harvey Heath and to them were bo
rn two sons in Weber on the Weber River where they made their home. The
re (sic) names were Harvey Olmstead Heath my grandfather and William Heat
h. She (Abigal) was a second wife to great-grandfather Heath his first wi
fe being a sister to her (Abigal's) husband Whiley (sic) Holden. Her na
me was Marie (sic) Holden (sic) she had ten children. This (the marria
ge of James Harvey Heath and Abigal Olmstead Weed Williams Holden Heath) w
as not a happy union and she finally left. She (Abigal) went to Provo (Ut
ah) and there she keep (sic) house for a man named Sam Thompson and marri
ed him. But when he took a second wife she left him and went to Payson (U
tah) to live with her daughter Catherine Mott. They moved to Chicken Cre
ek close to Juab and from there to salina (sic) the next year after it (Sa
lina, Utah) was settled the second time. She (Abigal) was a good church w
orker (sic) one of the officiers (sic) in the Relief Society in Salina. F
rom Salina she went with her son, my grandfather (Harvey Olmstead Heath
), to a place 10 miles east of Salina called Goosberry (sic) Creek and the
re she spent the remainder of her life. You may be sure she knew of the t
roubles with Indians and the fears these pioneer people of Utah had to end
ure. Their lives were full of toil and disappointment as only those bra
ve people will ever know. One peculiar thing was she always wanted to s
ee a train in Utah. But when they were about ready to take her to Provo f
or that was as far south as the railroad was in her time she suffered a st
roke and died one year later at the home of her son William Heath at Lo
ss Creek where she had gone for a visit. She died 18 or 26 July 1891 a
nd was buried in Salina, Utah in the North Cemetery.--Gathered and writt
en by Susan B. Walsh, a cousin of Dora Gates Christensen."

The following was obtained from Steven Heath and transcribed by him someti
me during the 1960's: "Biography of Abigail (sic) Olmstead Holden Heath--
Abigail (sic) Olmstead was born in Ohio, near Lake Erie, 25 Feb 1818. S
he was the daughter of Harvey and margaret (sic) Olmstead. The same Harv
ey Olmstead that was captured by the British Army, during the Revolutiona
ry War [This must have been the war (sic) of 1812--Steven Heath] and he
ld prisoner for seven years after which he escaped. [???--Steven Heat
h] Grandmother (Abigal) married very young to a man named Weed, by whom s
he had two children, Joshua and Mary Weed. Then he died leaving a wido
w. After which she married Wiley Holden (sic) there was four children bo
rn to them, Martha, Caroline, Catherine, and John Holden. Caroline and Ca
therine were twins. It was during this time that she heard of Joseph Smi
th and his doctrine. In her home state she joined the Church (LDS) in i
ts infancy and went with the saints to Nauvoo. (Same as other account--St
even Heath) She was engaged to marry a man by the name of Nickerson b
ut he went back to the states to help bring provisions and died. She lat
er married him (Sam Thompson--Steven Heath) and moved up Provo cany
on to a place called Midway where my father (Harvey Olmstead Heath) was ra
ised and went by the name of harvey (sic) Thompson (for a time--see 1860 c
ensus below that verifies this statement--Teri Popp). In 1874 my father (
Harvey Olmstead Heath, aka Harvey Thompson) married Susan carter (sic) bei
ng the first couple married in Salina. Soon after grandmother (Abigal) ca
me to be with my father and mother and resided with them until her death b
eing about seventy years (of age). Many times I have gone with her to gle
an, she would gather wheat tie it in small bundles and carry it home th
en she would cut the heads off and sort the straw saving the fine stra
ws in one pile and the courser (sic) ones in another. After they were a
ll sorted she would tie them in small bunches and soak a few at a ti
me in warm water and braid them and make hats for the family and many to s
ell. The fine braid was used for ladies hats and the course (sic) for m
en and boys. She taught me how to braid straw, to card and spin and ma
ke yarn. Yarn and wool bats for quilts also to knit stockings (sic) she w
as ambitious and was never idle. She was a great reader, but books were s
carce in those days at least in one (sic) home. In January 1891 she was t
aken with a stroke and laid for many weeks that she could not move. She f
inally got up again but (had) no use of her left arm. In April she to
ok a second stroke and was up again the next day. In July she took a thi
rd stroke and died 26 July 1891 at Salina and is buried at the North Cemet
ery in Salina. Written by her granddaughter--Harriet E. Heath, Wife (si
c) of Hyrum Smith Gates."
