Census information: 1790 Census, Ulster County, New York--Jacob would be o
ne of three males listed in his father, Hieronimus', household under the a
ge of 16 in Montgomery Township; 1800 Census, Ulster County, New York--Jac
ob would be the one male listed between the age of 10-16. In February 181
1, Jacob went with his father, Hieronimus, to Berlin Heights [Township?
], Ohio. Jacob Mingus served in the War of 1812 and is said to have carri
ed his brother, Daniel, into a log cabin after Daniel died. Jacob then bur
ied Daniel in the floorboards of the cabin. Jacob served in the War of 18
12 under Capt. Harvey Murray, Ohio Militia from August 21 to November 2
0, 1812. According to an 1815 Tax Bill, Jacob was a resident of Huron Town
ship, Huron County, Ohio. The following information was obtained from Jam
es L. Powell and is based on information obtained from the "History of Hur
on and Erie Counties, Ohio," Williams, W.W. (1879) at p. 192: "Jan. 16, 18
17 Marriage record states Jacob married Rebecca Bordney. All other informa
tion lists her as Rachel or Rebecca Burdue, daughter of Nathaniel or Nath
an and Margaret Burdue. Margaret Burdue's maiden name was Welsh. [Note: Th
is is the first known Mingus marriage recorded in Northern Ohio. The marri
age took place in Eldridge, Huron County, Ohio.] It is not known if the na
me Bordney is an error or perhaps she was a widow or divorced and Burdue w
as her maiden name. As she was about 27 when they married, she could ha
ve been married before." Jacob was a farmer and belonged to the Methodi
st Church. 1820 Census, Huron County, Ohio shows a Jacob Mingus on p. 77 w
ith one male under 10, one female 26-45 and one male over 45. [NOTE from J
LP: "As Jacob was bapt. in Jan. of 1785, he should be about 35 in the 18
20 census. For a long time, I thought the 1820 Census might be Jacob bo
rn about 1756 (not this Jacob). But I think it is more logical to assume t
hat it is indeed (this) Jacob and he simply should have been recorded in t
he other column as 26-45."] According to Tax Lists for Eldridge, Huron Cou
nty, Ohio from 1821, Jacob Mingus owned one horse, four cattle and ow
ed a tax of 70 cents. According to the 1825 Tax List for Huron County, Ohi
o, at p. 197, the following information is listed for Benjamin Mingus: "Mi
ngus, Benjamin (2)." Note: What does the "(2)" stand for on this documen
t? In the 1830 Census for Eldridge Township, Huron County, Ohio, the follo
wing persons existed in the home of Jacob Mingus: one male between 10-15 (
should be Benjamin at about 11 years of age); one male 40 to 50 (shou
ld be Jacob about 45 years of age); one female 10-15 (no record for this i
ndividual); one female 20-30 (no record for this individual); and one fema
le 40-50 (Rebecca about 41 years of age). NOTE: Eldridge Township, Ohio ch
anged its name to Berlin Township in 1823 according to Sharon Cooper [n
ow deceased]; but see the 1830 Census records. Berlin Township became a pa
rt of Erie County in 1838. According to the Berlin Township Grave Recor
d, Jacob Mingus is buried in Berlin Heights, Old Cemetery (also called t
he "Old Cemetery"). A War of 1812 grave marker was placed on Jacob's gra
ve by the Martha Pitkin Chapter of the D.A.R. According to the "Firelan
ds Pioneer," (Nov. 1858) at pp. 35-36: "Jacob Mingus lived and died on t
he farm where his widow now resides." According to the "History of Huron a
nd Erie Counties, Ohio," Williams, W.W. (1859) at pp. 477-78, Jacob "di
ed on farm now occupied by his son Benjamin." Reference: Tom Jenkins (p
er e-mail) citing "Family Records & History," from Alvin, Brazoria Count
y, Texas; and an article in "The Firelands Pioneer," Vol. III (pub. Fire L
ands Historical Society at Whittlesey Bldg., Norwalk, Ohio Nov. 1858). Acc
ording to the latter source p. 35, Hieronymus Mingus lived with his son, J
acob, after Hieronymus' wife's death. The article goes on to provide th
at Hieronymus had fought in the American Revolution, and that he was a "ve
ry worthy man."REBECCA (or RACHEL) BORDNEY/BURDUE: 1850 Census for Erie C
ounty, Ohio--lists Rebecca as 61 years of age and living with son, Benjami
n. 1860 Census for Erie County, Ohio, lists Rebecca as 76 years of age a
nd living with son, Benjamin. 1870 Census lists Rebecca as 80 years of ag
e, still with Benjamin. Rebecca is said to have died on January 18, 1870;
however, she is found in the 1870 Census for Erie County, Ohio and appea
rs to still be living in July of 1870 when the census was taken.
