Alpen Church Records 1719-1798 K992311 From Walter Weisner: Abraham Haack was,by the way,a doormann of the castle existing still at that time in Alpen.Abraham Haack as an armed protector of the construction column mentions.I have like wise taken into consideration their supposition which could come the Haacks maybe from Dutch areas, however, can also not cover, unfortunately.Another possibility would be the origin from the county "Bentheim" in the Muensterland. The rule Alpen belonged long long centuries to the prince to "Bentheim"and "Steinfurt".Still today old peoples papers from living lie in the archive to "Burgsteinfurt".In a list of the house site owners of 1768 become under the other following name mentions.House No.95,Bernd Vervoorth, proberty No.96-Joris Nervoorth, house No.121 Arnold Junkermann and widow Joris Nervoorth.Because the Haacks lived at this time probably in the castle, they are not mentioned. In later inhabitants lists this name will maybe appear. As said, they maybe lie in the archive to " Bentheim ". In the valley extensive construction work for the building of a new castle protected by water ditches began. The owner, Heinrich of Alpen, came however into financial difficulties. He pawned the castle to his father-in-law Gottfried of Hönnepel. In the following years he was not able to release the pledge so that the castle and rule of Alpen was soldThe purchase became finally Rutger of Garstorf, Edelvogt to Cologne. In its family (from now on also "Alpen" he called himself) castle and rule remained Alpen despite two-hundred-one hundred of continuing attempts of the family of the former owner to release the pledge. The only heiress of castle and rule Alpen, Alveradis of Alpen married Johann of Neuenahr, her second son Gumprecht of Neuenahr inherited in 1418 both the Erbvogtei to Cologne and the rule Alpen. One of his descendants, he carried likewise the name Gumprecht of Neuenahr I , in 1541 a house regulation for the castle Alpen was written for Gumprecht of Neuenahr II , which can give us references to the everyday life to the official present at the castle. If the morning had a problem, the cure guard (the night watchman in the actual sense) mounted the large tower, examined from there out above whether on the far level nothing was to be seen, which referred to a hostile assault. If this was not the case, he blew three times into his horn and gave thereby the signal to open the gates. On this indication the castle personnel living on the castle rose. The "lower doorman" occupied his job at the entrance to the fore-castle and refuse all not belonging to the house at the entrance. The "upper doorman" held during the day is awake at the gate to the main castle. During the winter time they maintained a constant fire, it was however forbidden for them to leave their post or sell fire wood under the hand. The castle guards as custodians of the castle, locked the gates in the morning and evening, and kept the keys. Also they stayed on the main castle and supervised occasionally the nocturnal rounds of the guards. These again two guards, per one for main and fore-castle, maintained likewise in the winter a fire, in order to be able to ignite their torches/flares. They went the night over their rounds, until the gates were unlocked. Afterwards they, like the remaining inhabitants, got their soup for breakfast. Who came too late to the meal, nothing more received. The cook prepared the tomorrow and communion times, ensured that nobody could arrive unauthorized into the kitchen and watched out that nobody scatched before the meal something edible of the buffet. The brauer brewed beer and baked bread. He was supported by the house farmhand, who worried about the firing wood. The supplies were stored by the work of the Boteliers or barrel binder in the cellar. The hunter usually procured the meat for the boarders, from rabbits and fowl game, a work which lasted all day long, which says something over the game scarceness of that time. On the chamfering days and Fridays however it was task of Fischer to provide for the board. Besides they had to protect the castle ditches against silting-up and clean it. The remaining castle personnel lived in the fore-castle, the stable master and it helping farmhand slept at the gate to the fore-castle, in order to be able to go to the lower guard if necessary to the hand. The rules of this house regulation for that, which undertakes it to read between the lines, are particularly interesting: Did the castle count or commander of the more frequent tend to stay overnight outside of the castle? Did Fischer go sometimes away, if he got someone with the basket putting? Did the guards pull the meals improperly into the length and did sell under the hand fire wood? One approximately thirty years later house regulation issued of castle gentlemen Adolf of new ahr 4 calls a same number of people, which belonged to the castle personnel. As obligation of the hunter one added: The castle Alpen lasted approximately four hundred years, until it became uninhabitable by the earthquake of the year 1758. Their remnants were broken off with the building of the Chaussée in the year 1809. Today only the tree-covered hill at the edge of the city tells of its size.
