RIN..1418 BIRTH..1768 KRR NY age 15 in 1783 as John MARRIAGE. CHILDREN.. DEATH.. John (born 1768) wasn't mentioned by Conrad in his 1849 Land petition even though all the other siblings were listed with their ages as recalled. Why did Conrad list only John age 76 (1773) and not John (1768)? Was it because Conrad was born in 1792 by which time John had moved or died and Conrad really did not know or remember his oldest brother? John was born several years before the 2nd John (born in 1773), and was with the family when they moved from Fort Niagara to Machiche in Jul 1779 as the male over 10. John Kentner enlisted in the KRR NY on 22 May 1780 at age 12. He served in the 1st Bn for 1 year and in the 2nd Bn for 1 yr 9 mos for a total of 2 years 9 months. In 1783 he was listed as age 15 in KRR NY Records. John's name was on the "Old UE List" and he would normally have recived a grant of land as UE even though he was only 16 in 1784 when his father, George, settled on Lot 10 Con 3, Matilda Twp. It's possible that John Kentner lost out in the granting of land, or more likely, it's possible that John did get a ticket for 100 acres of land as UE but sold it. as did many, some for next to nothing, others for a few Pounds considering his age, 16. He was however named in the Loyalist Land Grants by McNiff in 1786 in a very peculiar way. Re Lot 12 Con 1 Matilda Twp Mrs McCarthy (in red ink, J Kintners Wm McCormack) The Land Abstract records it was granted to Mrs McCarthy & Wm McCormack. The "red ink" suggests that there was some confusion in that grant. There is no record, found to date, that John as a KRR NY veteran Loyalist got any l Joseph Letress s/o Mary Kentner & Joseph Letress b 15 Dec 1795 bp 3 Jan 1796 Wit John Guntner & Anna Klein (Liber A p404) [Could have been either John Kentner,] March 8 1817 John Kintner involved in the sale of Lot 30 Con 2 or Con 3 Matilda all.. [Either John] In his Land Petition in 1849 as SUE Conrad listed his siblings and their ages. As his memory was faulty re his sisters Eleanor, Elizabeth and Sarah & his brother Frederick's ages it follows that he may well have erred in John's, & Mary©ルus ages. Those two were born during the turbulent years following the indenture. Apparently John did not go to Dundas with the family, probably remaining with the Regimental group. When the family arrived in Matilda Twp Dundas Co. in Sep. 1784, there was one boy above 10 listed along with 1 boy under 10 & 2 girls both under 10. That was John (born 1773) John born 1768 may well have gone up river with his regiment and simply did not return to his family for reasons unknown. Or: he might have been dead when John b 1773 moved to Hinchinbrook QC, married Clarinda Reed and raised the recorded family.
