Arms: Azure, a buckle Argent between three boars' heads couped -Badge: Abee on a thistle, all Proper oMotto: Dulcius ex asperis (Sweeter afterdifficulties) oGaelic Name: MacFhearghuis Tartans: Fergusson, Fergussonof Balquhidder oSepts: Fergie, Fergus, Ferguson, Ferries, Firgie,Keddie,Kiddie,MacAdie,MacFergus, MacKeddie, MacKerras, MacKersey.

The origin of the name Fergusson or Ferguson, 'sonofFergus'(MacFhearguisin Gaelic), is shrouded by the mists oftime.Medievalhistorians recordeda tradition that the founder ofScotland'smonarchywas a Fergus who livedin Ireland about 300 B.C.Historicalresearchdating from the l3th centuryconfirms that by 500 A.D.the ScotsunderKing Fergus Mor had left NorthernIreland and becameestablishedinDalriada, now Argyll. From Fergus Mor,with a fewearlyexceptions, descend all subsequent kings and queens oftheScots, including thepresent Queen of Great Britain. St. Columba of Iona(6thcentury A.D. .)was a scion of Fergus Mor's royal line.

In one of the oldest documents of ancient Scottish history ,the'Tractonthe Men of Alby ' , Fergusson is the only modem clannamementioned.Somewriters believe the Fergusson had their day as apowerfulclan priortothe 13th century and became dispersed from Argyll(Dalriada)as theScotsspread into other parts of Scotland. Before the 18thcentury,atleastfive groups of Fergusson possessed lands and lived in thestyleofa clanunder their respective chiefs inArgyll,Perthshire,Aberdeenshire,Dumfriesshire, and Ayrshire. Today, theKilkerranFergussons in Ayreshireand the family of Fergusson ofBaledmundand theFergussons ofBalquhidder, both in Perthshire, are stillownersofextensive lands.

The name is also common in Ulster where there havebeenseverallandedfamilies, some claiming to have been planted there fromAAyrshirein the17th century .Others of the name in Antrim andnea1bycountiesdescendfrom people who did not migrate to Dalriada in the5thcentury .

The dispersed Clan Fergusson has not blazed the battlefieldwithglorieswonby the sword. However, 'Sons of Fergus' fought with Bruceinthe WarsofIndependence. Some Perthshire Fergussons were outwithMontrose in1644. Theoldest soldier in Prince Charles Edward's ArmyatPrestonpansin the '45 wasan 80-year-old Ferguson. In modem timesandduring WorldWars I and II manyFergus(s)ons from Scotland andabroadweredistinguished military leaders.Clan Fergusson has been termeda'gentlefroce' that gained respectedprominence from live and letlive.Recently, however, a clansman, afterlooking at Mclan's depictionof'TheFergusson' as a barefooted,Claymore-wielding, helmetedwarriorwearingthe ancient Lein-croich, orsaffron colored shirt of theCelts, remarkedthat 'if Clan Fergusson is a'gentle force' he was gladthewarrior wasone of us and not a foeman!'

'Sons of Fergus' the world over have gaineddistinctioninnonmilitaryactivities, e.g. in the law, the church, government, the arts and sciences, medicine, education, agricultureand inbusiness and industry. Mention can only bemade ofAdam Fergusonthephilosopher (1724-1816) and Robert Fergusson(1750-
