'Sir Gilbert de la Haya and his brother Hugh, descendantsinthefifthgeneration from this royal butler [William de la Hayawhomarriedthedaughter of Ranulph de Soulis], were amongst the firstoftheScottishbarons to repair to the standard of Robert Bruce,andwerepresent at hiscoronation. Hugh was taken prisoner at thebattleofTippermuir, butGilbert made his escape, with Bruce and a smallbodyoffollowers, intothe wilds of Athole, and shared in allhissubsequentperils andprivations. Hugh must in some way have regainedhisliberty,for hefought, along with his brother, at Bonnockburn. SirGilbertwascreated,by King Robert Bruce, High Constable of Scotland --anofficewhich wasmade hereditary in his family, and received fromhisgratefulsovereign agrant of the lands of Slains, in Aberdeenshire,whichis stillthe seatof his descendants.'
