James McIlvaine is believed to have been the brother ofRobertandAndrew,Sons of John (George) McIlvaine of Grimet and SarahClard,whomoved toIreland. It is also believed that he is the James whocametoAmerica withRobert and Andrew. Apparently all three triedtheirfortunesin SouthCarolina as early as 1732 and while Robert andAndrewreturnedtoPennsylvania about 1738-1740, James and his familyremainedinCravenCounty, North Carolina. James was a man ofconsiderableinfluenceandprominence. He was Justice of the Peace forChowan in 1739,Chairmanof aPeace Commission, 1739, and as a member of theHouse ofBurgesses1736.The family name was Mackilwean. The name is spelledinNorthCarolinarecords as McKlveen, Macklevian, McLewean,McElvainandMcClewean, etc. James Mackilwean is believed to be the brotherof Robert andAndrew,sonsof John McIlvaine of Grimett and Sarah Clark wholived toIreland. Itisbelieved that he came to America with Robert andAndrew.James wasinNorth Carolina in 1738 settling in eastern NorthCarolina,hisplantationcalled Tower Hill. He was a surveyor and wasprominent inthecolony. Hemarried Elinor and they had several children:John,Francis,Margaret,Mary and Sarah. Mary was the wife of the firstgovernorofNorthCarolina.
