The reserach about William Copp is quite confusing. There is evidencethat he had a brother in Warwickshire named Anthony. The "Descendantsof William Copp"(http://www.ourwebsite.org/dewolf/descnarratives/WilliamCopp.htm)quotes: "We learn a few facts of William?s family in Hatton, Warwicksfrom the will of Anthony Copp, yoeman, of Honeley, Warwicks. Anthony?swill was dated 16 Jan. 1653 and proved at Westminister on 13 June1654. Anthony, who married Denny (?), speaks of ?his brother, WilliamCopp, who is in New England?; his brother Walter; his nephews Thomasand Samuel; and of his sisters Hannah who married (?) Edwards,Elizabeth who married Richard Tippin, Mary who married (?) Busbie, asister who married Richard Heath, and a sister who married John Ward.We find from this will that Anthony had some property including a fairamount of land which would indicate that Anthony was of fair means..." This establishes William as brother of Anthony. Also, the will ofThomas Copp from 1624 names a William among his sons(http://members.fortunecity.com/dickcoveney/p63.htm#i3410). This, together with his marriage to a Judith in 1634 is enough evidence toestablish William Copp as being from Warwickshire. Unclear is: 1) Is the William that has been baptized in 1589 in Hatton ourWilliam? It makes him quite old to have several children from his wifeafter migrating to New England. 2) Is he the same William who marries in 1614 Ann Rogers? This can beverified thorugh checking his marriage record in 1634 and identify himas a widower. He defintely had children that were born before 1634which clearly points to a second marriage. 3) Is he the William Cope that came in 1635 on board of the "Blessing"to Massachusetts? The passenger lists seem to give this William an ageof 26 which would make him too young. However, " NEW YORK GENEALOGICALAND BIOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY RECORD (Oct. 1931), v.62, pp.338-354; NEWENGLAND HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL REGISTER, v.58,p.118" seems togive an age of 46 years from this passenger list which wouls exactlycorresponde with a birth in 1589. To verify this, the originalpassenger list needs to be reviewed to make sure, the number 26 is notan error that has been mistakenly transferred through differentsources. All together, it seems to be plausible that the 1589 William Copp isour William Copp. His age and the passenger list seem to be the onlyreasons not to accept this information. Soon after his arrival he had acquired half an acre of land in theNorth End of Boston, at the head of Prince St., on the water frontoverlooking the Charles River, and built a house there just by alittle cove. Southwest of it was a mill, whence a causeway ran in anorthwesterly direction across the marsh. A short distance northeastof his home was the Charlestown Ferry. His holdings are described inthe Boston BOOK OF POSSESSIONS as "One house & lott of halfe and Acrein the Mill field bounded with Thomas BUTTOLPH southeast; John BUTTONnortheast; the Marsh on the southwest; and the River on theNorthwest." The tract called the "Mill Field" took its name from awind-mill used for grinding corn, etc. which stood in the midst of it.The mill was located on the top of the most northerly of the threehills, upon which old Boston was built. This hill was originallycalled Mill Hill. Its name was changed to Snow Hill and subsequentlyto Copp's Hill, --- the latter being its present designation. William COPP was admitted as a member of the First Church of Boston on20 June 1640. His wife, Judith was admitted, 24 Jan. 1640/41. Hebecame a freeman, June 1641. William COPP was a shoemaker who lived in Boston where he owned asmall cove made in south, with marsh stretching farther east. He alsoowned one house and a half-acre lot in the mill field between theBUTTOLPH and BUTTON properties bound by the marsh and river. In his will, in 1669, he calls himself sick and weak; a cordwainer byoccupation; and he leaves the enjoyment of the house to his wife,"Gooddeth." In his inventory his house, out-houses, orchard, garden, and land about the house are valued at ?80. (See also Sewall Papers,ii., 408.) Not far from this point, and taking part of the property ofthe Gas Company, early in the next century Joshua Gee had a ship-yard,and he owned adjacent lands, which fell, in 1724, to his son Ebenezer(d. 1730), and finally wholly to Rev. Joshua Gee, who died in 1748,when the estate was divided according to a document which "Gleaner"calls one of the most important in the Probate Office. [He had a house and half an acre in the Mill field, with the marshsouth-west, Thomas Buttolph south-east, the river northwest, JohnButton north-east. Hence he had the corner lot.--W.H.W.]
