Officer Kyle Ballard, 30, collapsed after running two laps around thestadium. Pope said Ballard was training for an annual Baker to LasVegas relay race that he and other officers participated in everyyear. Pope said Ballard veered away from several other police officers hewas running with at the end of a second lap and collapsed. The otherofficers immediately began performing CPR. Paramedics who happened tobe at the site also attempted to revive Ballard before rushing him toHuntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:06 a.m. Thecause of Ballard’s death was not immediately known. “In every assignment that he worked, in terms of work ethic, everybodywho he has worked for and those he brushed against thought he was anoutstanding person,” said Cmrdr. Chris Vicino. “He was the kind of guy that would be there and give you the shirt offhis back. If you needed someone, you could call Kyle Ballard. There isa certain type of person you know right away that the law enforcementprofession means a great deal to. He was proud of his profession,”Vicino said. Ballard came to the department on Aug. 10, 1998, after completing hispre-service training at the Rio Hondo Police Academy. He worked inpatrol and the department’s special enforcement and special operationssections. Ballard was at the scene of two controversial incidents that led toaccusations of brutality against the department. On Sept. 26, 2003, Ballard was involved in a brawl on El Sereno Avenuethat pitted Pasadena police officers against three teenagers — CarltonCrayton and his two foster brothers, James Patton and Michael Miller. Officers claimed that the teens were the aggressors and had tried tokill them. Witnesses, however, countered police claims. The threeeventually became known as the El Sereno 3, and despite the severenature of the initial charges filed against them, none of themreceived jail time in relation to the incident. On the night of April 10, 2004, Ballard and several other officersencountered LaMont Robinson on Mentone Avenue. Although it is stillunclear exactly what transpired, Robinson had what officials called acardiac episode which left him comatose for three days. Officers claimed Robinson had that episode after he ingested anundetermined amount of cocaine. Police said they used a chokehold onRobinson only to prevent him from swallowing the drugs. Neighbors andwitnesses said Robinson was beaten and placed in the chokehold bypolice. Robinson died on July 10 without regaining consciousness. An internalinvestigation later cleared the officers of any wrongdoing. Several officers who were having a hard time dealing with Ballard’sdeath asked for time off. Officers from different police agencies, including San Gabriel and Alhambra, are set to ride with Pasadenaofficers Saturday to help with patrols. Officer Kyle Ballard, 30, of Hesperia had been with the PasadenaPolice Department since 1998 and seemed to be in excellent health, police said. Chief Bernard Melekian said he and the department are "verydistraught," but the primary focus is helping the family cope with thetragedy. "There really aren't any words that are adequate to describe the senseof grief you feel when a fine young man like this dies so suddenly,"Melekian said. Friday morning, Ballard was among a group of officers training for theupcoming Baker-to-Vegas Challenge Cup Relay, where police departmentsstatewide compete in a desert run. Around 10:30 a.m., the group finished two laps around the Rose Bowland had slowed to a walk when Ballard veered off and fell to theground, said Janet Pope-Givens, spokeswoman for the department. Officers and a group of paramedics training nearby administered firstaid and CPR, and Ballard was rushed to Huntington Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 11:06 a.m. Ballard was well known and liked in the department, Melekian said. "He was enthusiastic, outgoing, loved police work and loved hisfamily," he said. "This is a tough deal, tough." Ballard had served in some of the department's most physicallydemanding roles, including bicycle patrol and special enforcementsection. "He was the epitome of physical fitness, the assignments he heldrequired it," Pope said. The officer's body is now at the county Coroner's Office, where anautopsy will determine his cause of death. Posted February 24, 2006 06:07 PM Pasadena Weekly New and Entertainment: Remembering 'a good officer' Friends to meet Friday at the Rose Bowl where Officer Kyle Ballardcollapsed after jogging By André Coleman Kyle Ballard Pasadena Police Officer Kyle Ballard had every reason to be elated. Last Friday morning, the veteran police officer and avid runner hadjust completed his fastest time ever around the Rose Bowl. A monthprior to that, he had passed a department physical with flying colors. But in a matter of moments while jogging that day, the 30-year-oldfather of three veered away from several other police officers andcollapsed. Officers and paramedics on the scene were unable to revivethe eight-year veteran, who was pronounced dead a short while later atHuntington Hospital. This Friday, Ballard's colleagues, friends and family members willmeet at the spot where Ballard collapsed to pray before taking part ina procession to First Church of the Nazarene, 3700 E. Sierra MadreBlvd., for a memorial service at 11 a.m. "I asked someone to send me a list of stories" featuring Ballard, saidPasadena Police Chief Bernard Melekian. "There was a common theme. Hewas always helping people, and was a very good handyman. "There are people who have called me and apparently Officer Ballardhad come across people who needed help with different things, likeplumbing repair. He would come by when he was off duty with his wifeand help them. The list goes on and on," said Melekian. "He was a good officer. He always had a smile on his face, and he wasdevoted to his family. Everybody says that about people, but it wastrue in his case. It breaks my heart thinking about his kids." Ballard appeared to be in excellent condition. He was training for theBaker to Vegas law enforcement relay race, a nationally recognizedrace that attracts officers from around the country. The Pasadenadepartment has finished in the top 10 of the race every year for thepast decade. Cmdr. Chris Vicino said Friday that Ballard was a bigpart of the team's success. According to the Los Angeles Department of the Coroner, it will takemore than a month to determine the exact cause of death. "It takes six to eight weeks pending the results of lab tests," saidLt. Cheryl MacWillie. As in the recent and more famous cases of actor Chris Penn andprofessional wrestler Eddie Guerrero, the results are being delayed aspathologists await the results of toxicology examinations. The testsare considered normal procedure. Possessing a warm smile and boyish good looks, Ballard seemed toimpact people positively, no matter what job he was working at. Police spokesperson Janet Pope Givens said Ballard was a caring personthat always treated people with respect. Ballard came to the Pasadena Police Department in 1998 after attendingthe Rio Hondo Police Academy. He graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with abachelor's degree in criminology. "He was assigned to a light duty assignment with me at the frontdesk," said Givens. "Most cops hate it, but he treated everyone whocame in that office with respect. He was a caring and compassionateindividual who cared about people and it showed. He was the kind ofperson whose soul touched yours and yours touched his when you met himone on one." Ballard's obituary ran in the Pasadena Star-News on March 1. Within 24hours, some 20 people had signed the online guest book remembering himas a champion, a mentor and a great father. A memorial fund has been established for Ballard. Donations can bemailed to Officer Kyle R. Ballard Memorial Fund, Pasadena FederalCredit Union, 1038 S. Ballard ran the seventh leg of the Baker to Vegas Relay Race in 2004.He finished in 55:29 seconds and had the 115th best time overall.Nearly 300 law enforcement officers competed in that portion of the10K race. "He wasn't running on flat land," said Chuck Foote, who serves as arace consultant for event and also regularly competes. "When youconsider that it's up and around a mountain, that's not a bad time atall." One person that did not wish to be identified said, "I was up in somestuff and Ballard was fair. He took me to jail, but he wasn't outthere mistreating anybody. He would stop and talk to you and make sureyou were keeping it together."
