Notizen zu dieser Person

One record says he was born 18 Jan 1881. Kornelius was only 16 yearsold when his father died. He had to help his widowed mother take careof the family of 8 children, besides himself. He met Anna von Kampenat a wedding. There he fell in love with her. He remembered later, that she had been wearing a lovely blouse. They were married on June5, 1901 at Gruenfeld, Baratov, South Russia. It was a double weddingwith his sister, Margaret and Jacob Berg at their mother andstep-father's home. Their uncle, Rev. Aron Warkentin officiated atthe weddings. They moved in with Anna's parents, who lived in Gruenfeld. Theirfirst daughter, Anna, was born in March 1902 and died ten monthslater. Soon after, they bought a house in Gruenfeld. On September 3,1903, their house and a good number of other houses were destroyed byfire. Their second daughter, Helena, wasn't even three weeks old atthe time of the fire. Kornelius was working in the field at the timeand Anna took the baby to a safe place and tried to save as much asshe could from the house along with an old Russian man helping her.Kornelius learned of the fire so he hurried home with his dog. Hewent into the house with the dog following but the fire had spread allover. He managed to get out but the dog perished in the fire. Thehouse was afterwards rebuilt and they lived in it until 1907. In1907, they moved with three children onto a rented farm atPetroanowka, some 80 miles away. Here they lived about seven years, until the start of World War I. When the war started, Kornelius wasdrafted into the service as an orderly in a hospital at Orechowo. Hewas nursing typhoid patients and he contracted this contagiousdisease. Anna went to visit him at that time. With the doctor'spermission, he was able to go home and recover for a couple of weeks. One night, while he was at home, the watchman warned him that thieveswould be coming. He and Jakob Jenzen went outside and a shot washeard. The bullet just missed Kornelius. The Lord sent His angel toprotect him. Since conditions were growing worse, they returned to Gruenfeld afteran auction sale at the farm. At the end of the war, Kornelius wasable to return home. He was active in many ways. Among other thingshe was called upon to attend the many sick people in the village, applying his recent training and to co-ordinate the help. When reliefsupplies arrived from America, he was involved in the distribution ofthe supplies to the most needy people. Not owning a house inGruenfeld, the family had to move often. As living conditions in Russia did not give any hope for the future, they decided to emigrate to Canada in 1923. Unfortunately, three oftheir daughters were rejected at the medical inspection point atReshitza (Latvia). Justina arrived in Canada four months later.Helena arrived in Canada on August 12, 1924 and Aganeta (Nettie)arrived in the fall of 1925. In 1924 they settled on a farm in the Swift Current area. In 1943they retired from farming and purchased a house in Swift Current,Saskatchewan.
