Citizenship, Outagamie Co., WI: N.A. Scmit, Germany, 6 June 1879, Vol. 1 225
A biography of Nicholas A. Schmit appears in Commemorative Biographical Record of Fox River Valley, Wisconsin. He came to the U.S. in 1849 and spent 6 months in Milwaukee. He then came to Greenville WI, where he worked 5 or 6 years. He purchas
ed timberland in Ellington Twp. in 1855, which he cleared and turned into farmland.
He died of kidney disease at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
His death certificate gives his parents' names as Bernhard and Mathilda Schmit.
The 1860 census for Outagamie Co. WI, Ellington Twp. p.168 shows Antoine? Smith, age 30, birthplace Prussia farmer, value of farm $1500, value of personal property, $600; Catherina, age 35, birthplace Prussia; and Catherine, birthplace WI. This
is on the same page as the households of Peter Smith and Dominic Smith, also shown with Prussia as birthplace. Could these be the Schmit brothers who biographies appear in Commerative Biographies of the Fox River Valley? Are "A. Schmit", "Antoi
ne Smith" and "N.A. Scmit" one and the same person?
Census of 1900 shows him as Nicholas Schmit, born June 1830 in Germany, emigrated in 1849; wife Katherine, born April 1826; granddaughter, Anna Hoier, born July 1879.
