BIOGRAPHIE: NOTES BY MARGARET SCHATZ, REMEMBRANCE OF HER GRANDFATHER, (Michael Peter Becker) He owned and operated a cigar factory at Custer and Jackson St. In Brillion, WI. My dad, Eugene J. Becker, at age 11, hand made a wooden box, as a gift for his sister, LOUISE BECKER. It was to be her hope chest. It is a simple box with much meaning. I have it and used it over the years for a toy box for my children and grandchildren. It was made from the shipping crating wood that tobacco came in to make cigars. Grandpa, Michael Peter Becker's cigar factory building was on the same property where my father Eugene John Becker was born and lived all his childhood. It was the factory that made the most cigars to the tune of 1,400,000 in 1921. The home and factory were in Brillion, Calumet CO. WI. In about 1942, Michael P. sold the factory and homestead to, my parents, Eugene and Ann SCHNEIDER BECKER. I lived in this home until I was almost 9 years of age, just before we moved North Kansas City, MO. The original cigar factory building still stands in 2002. It was turned into a two unit apartment in about 1944 when I was 4 years old. I remember gutting of the building and the building of the steps in front of it which still has the "B" for Becker in the wrought iron grill work. -written by Margaret Ann (Becker ) SCHATZ.
