Elizabeth Shanklin Melloo Duflot was born October 23, 1886 atMayfield, KY and was the oldest of three children of Walter Scott Mellooand his wife, Merrie Shanklin Melloo. She was educated in the MayfieldPublic Schools, and in 1905, she received a B.A. degree from WestKentucky College, graduating in the same class with Joseph Leo. She wasan outstanding mathematician. However, her speciality was in music andshe became quite accomplished in this field. for many years she wasorganist at the First Baptist Church at Mayfield. All her life she was agreat lover of music, and with the coming of the radio she seldom failedto listen to the Saturday afternoon programs sponsored by theMetropolitan Opera company. she becamean ardent student of the operaand had a representative understanding not only of the meaning andsignificance of the scores but also the stories they dramatized.
In February 1945, we were at a dinner party given at the home of Mr.and Mrs. F.E. Savage when she suffered a stroke at the table. The attackwas diagnosed as a hemorrhage of the arachnoid membrane of the brainsince in her case no symptoms of paralysis were present. Within threeweeks she was dismissed from the hospital, and a few months later she wasable to resume her normal household and social activities.
In the spring of 1951, signs of paralysis began to appear, and bySept. 1st it had so nibbled away at her muscular system until the wholeright side of her body became paralyzed. She accepted her tragic illnessmost philosophically and fortwo years she bore her affliction withoutone word of complaint demonstrating a stoical patience that endeared herto neighbors and friends and setting an example of meeting a fatal crisiswith calmness and fortitude.
It is not within my gift of expression to describe the beauty of herlife for her descendants. She needs no panegyric to enshrine her intheir hearts. Those who know her loved her and that is the most that canbe said of the most exalted. She lived a simple life confined to homeand friends. She was human and subject to all the emotional reactionscommon to the human lot which arise from the problems or pleasures thatvex or gratify it. But the one unforgettable trait that pervaded herlife was that she remained calm and even-tempered in every crisis.
She loved people and social life, read the best literature, keptwell informed on current events, expressed herself in immaculate English, reserved in speech but never at the price of dissimulation, free from allpietistic deliverances andprofessions, visited the sick and lonely inloving and tender silence scarcely mentioning her thoughtfulministrations to members of her own family, and above all, she was mostdevoted to her home keeping it always a beautiful, neat, and sweet placein which to live and a happy shrine where we loved, and worshipped, andenjoyed life at is fullest. She was the first to be interred in MemoryGardens near Canyon, TX on Highway 87.
