Notes for this person

"My parents immigrated from Germany to Ukraine before I was born at Sapust, Boratyn, near Lutzk. They returned to Germany in 1913. Homesteads were being given to returning Germans by the German Kaiser who created a commission in 1908 for 75-80 homesteads given with no payment or interest for 3 yrs. My family returned intending to go to the USA, but "red eyes" of the children delayed trip." (Rudolf Reschke, 1976)

Rudolf and his father were drafted in German army in 1914 and 1916. Rudolf became prisoner of English abt 1917, released in 1919. Immigrated to USA in 1922 with sister Helen. Brother Bert went to USA in 1910 (abt age 15). Most others went to Brazil (Father Adolf in 1924). Rudolf worked in Chicago in construction till 1929 when stock market dropped and banks closed. SS Index shows died in Chicago, Ill. (Info from personal interview with Rudolf in 1976 and further research.)

Ellis Island Records show he came with sister Helene, departed from Hamburg, Germany, arriving September 5, 1922. Both resided in Karft, Germany, prior to departure. At time of arrival, she was age 24 and he was 25. Ship was Mount Clinton. Went to live with "uncle" Adolf Schulz living at 2221 Kostner, Chicago. Place of birth for both Rudolf & Helene was Sapust, Poland.

Brothers came on Westphalia on July 4, 1923. Place of birth was:

Bertholdt - Saport, Russia (from Ellis Island records. Could be Sapust or Zapust.)

1930 Census (April) shows Rudolf was age 33, married at age 27, owned home (value $10,000), immigrated in 1922, Papers (for naturalization), presently working as a laborer in the building trade. Besides spouse and two sons, several roomers and lodgers were at their address of 913 Webster, Chicago. (One family was Henry Mueller, Sr., Lya (spouse?) and Henry, Jr., all from Germany.

Buried in the Graceland Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois.
