Tragic Accident on Highway 99
HAROLD PAGELER MET DEATH IN CAR CRASH NORTH OF WAMEGO
Harold Pageler had been to a dance in Belvue Saturday night, accompanied by two girls. After the dance he brought the girls home, one to Wamego, one to Louisville. As far as can be ascertained, he slept for a time in the car at Louisville and then started for home. Harold saw service in the South Pacific in the recent war and was not in the best of health. He had several heart attacks. Coming south on No. 99 he had almost reached Wamego when his car, a Model A. Ford, hit the bridge just north of the High School building and burst into flames. The accident occurred about 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Neil Weybrew, who lives north of the bridge, heard the crash , saw the flames and called the Wamego Fire Department. a quick response was made by men in cars with extinguishers and there was Harold in the car. later the fire truck went out and cooled the wreckage down enough to removed the body. An investigation showed that the car traveled 118 feet on the west shoulder of the highway, struck the concrete bridge on the northwest corner, bounded to the center of the bridge, turning completely around. Apparently the gas tank, in the front of the car caught fire burning the care and driver. the care was a Ford 1930 Model A coupe, Harold was evidently killed instantly as the door of the care was open and escape would have been easy. The corner came from Westmoreland, viewed the wreckage and then the body was taken to Stewart's mortuary. It will never by known whether he was asleep or had a heart attack. Harold, after leaving the armed forces, had worked in Wamego and had many friends here as well as in the Wells Creek community, the place of his birth. The sorrowing relatives have the sympathy of their many friends. It seems tough that a young man who survived World Warr II should meet his end in such an accident Obituary next week.
