A story post on ancestry.com regarding Margaret Hill`s grandfather:
When Richard Lud Givens died, I was very young and so, I don`t really remember mygrandpa. So here are two things I`ve heard about him. Several years ago,I helped to organize the first ever reunion for the descendents of Robert "OldBob" Givens. There are stories about this patriarch already in print in a bookat the Baker Musuem in Baker, Florida (Okaloosa County). I can`t remember the name of the book, but I believe it might actually be "Diamond G Patriarch" or something. The lady that wrote the book tells about how this ancestor ran cattle in the pineywoods of Florida and his cattle brand was also the name of his ranch.During the reunion, another branch of the family was just conversing and trading memories. One fellow told about how his grandfather was once shot atback in the woods (he escaped physical harm). The fellow that shot at him, exclaimed, "Oh, I didn`t mean to shoot you! I thought you were Lud (my grandfatherand the target`s brother)! I knew that my grandparents had become membersof the Baptist Church in Niceville because I remembered being taken there as a child by my grandmother, Alice nee` SETTLES, whenever I`d go to visit her--I waspretty young, I think, but to this day, I remember seeing men standing at the doors or in the back, with long sticks. My grandmother told me that if I wasn`t good, they would come over and tap me on the head. That was kind of scary, and since I haven`t grown up in the Baptist or even a traditional Southern church, Idon`t know if it was true or not. Later, after my mother, Opal Marie Givens Hill, died, I found the baptismal certificates for both my grandmother andmy grandfather. They were both adults at the time. The Baptist Church had a Centennial celebration a couple of years ago; I was too shy to go, but they had the history of the church on display and pictures, etc. Anyway, it is my beliefthat they may have joined the church for spiritual reasons, but it probably hadsomething to do with the fact that my grandfather was active in local communityissues and a business man in the town of Niceville (he had an ice house). He was one of the 333 that signed a petition for the town to be incorporated and he and my grandmother lived on what is now prime property, and maybe was at that time, also: on BayShore Drive, on Boggy Bayou, which connects with Choctawhatchee Bayou. I have since discovered a picture of my grandfather Lud`s icehouse in a local history book, I bought at the Heritage Museum in Valparaiso, Florida. He may have had a wild youth or something, but I believe he settled down as he got older.
