Obituary: Mr. Abraham Coon died at his home, near Gordon, Sheridan county, Neb., July9, 1886. He was born in Ohio, September 7, 1820. He, with his parents, moved toIndiana when a boy. After residence there of a number of years, he went to Wisconsin; thence to Iowa, and in the spring of 1886 moved to Sheridan county, Neb.The funeral services were held at his home. Many friends paid their last tributeof respect by their attendance at the funeral. He was laid to rest south of town on the school section. Raymond Coon was kind enough to send this article to me: From and article in the Sheridan County Star, dated Jan 6, 1977 on page 4: Abraham Coon moved from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsinto Correctionville, Iowa where he raised his family. In 1884 he relocated to western Nebraska when his son, Henry Jackson Coon, returned from there to collect the family consisting of his parents, two brothers and a sister. They travelled by boxcar to the end of the train line at Valentine, Nebraska and went the rest of the way by team and wagon. Abraham and his son took homesteads. Jack filed inthe Wounded Knee area and Abraham filed on land further south, closer to where the town of Gordon was later to be established. "Abraham was a veterinarian in Iowa, and soon took up his work here. Jack, at that time, assisted in the care ofthe livestock until his father`s death." Abraham was buried in the first cemetery in the small settlement of Gordon, but as the town grew, and more room was needed, the cemetery was then moved to its present location. The older graves weredug up and moved to the new plots. Abraham did not want any of his sons to follow in his work. He seemed to think his sickness had something to do with a kind of poisoning he acquired from the stock. Jack obeyed his father`s wishes, but kept the old medicine case, which is still in the family.
