Richard Woodward on March 6th, 1687 purchased land fromJohnSimcock.230acres in Thornbury Twp. Chester Co. PA. This land hadbeenpurchasedbySimcock from William Penn. He served on a jury June 5,1688toSeptember11, 1688. Supervisor of Highways for Thornbury Twp.1688.Hewasappointed constable twice for Thornbury in 1693 andforUpperProvidencein 1694. Purchased an additional 250 acres of landformJohnWorral, Feb15, 1695 in Middletown, Chester Co., PA. On December10,1698he deed 130acres of his Thornbury land to his son Richard andanother100acres tohis son Edward.

Richard and Jane were early settlersin Middletown, PA. He servedonajuryin 1688, was a supervisor in 1689 and constable in 1693.

The Woodwards are an ancient English familiy and in earlydayscametoAmerican colonies, settling in New England, New JerseyandVirginia.Thisbranch descends from Richard Woodward. Richard boughtatract oftwohundred thirty acres in Thornbury Township, Chester Co,PA,March6,1687, from John Sinnock, same being a part of fifteenhundredandfiftyacres the latter had been purchased from WilliamPennbeforeleavingEngland (many Quakers purchased land from William Penn).Onpartof thispurchase Richard Woodward settled and there some ofhischildrenwereborn. He served as constable, juror, grand juror,supervisorofhighwaysand seem to have been quite prominent. The recordsofChestermonthlymeeting of Friends states that 'Richard Woodward,senior,died onthe 7thday of the 10th month, 1706, aged about seventyyears..'His willwasproved January 8, 1706. In that document he names 'Mywellbelovedwife,Jane Woodward,' sons Richard, Joseph, Thomas andEdward,anddaughtersMartha, Jane, Mary and Sarah.

WILL OF RICHARD WOODWARD, 1706 In the Name of God, Amen: the Sixth ofSeptember Ano. Do. 1706, inyefifthyear of the Reign of Queen Anne overEngland &ct. IRichardWoodward ofMiddletown in the County of Chester &Province ofPensilvaniayeom. beingsick & weak of body but of sound andperfectmemory; praisebe unto God ofye same and knowing the uncertainty ofthislife &Desireous to settlethings in order do make this my last Will&Testamentin manner & formfollowing viz. Imp'rs. First I commend mySoultoAlmighty God believingthat I shall receive remission of all my sins&besaved by the preciousDeath and merits of Jesus Christ and my bodytotheEarth to be buried insuch decent & Christian manner asmyExecutorshereafter nam'd shall thinkfitt & convenient. As for myWorldlyEstatew'ch God hath given me my will& meaning is it shall beemployedandbestowed as by this Will is Expressedand I do revokerenouncefrustrateand make void all Wills by me formerlymade & declarethis mylastWill &Testament. Item, I give and bequeath untomy well belovedwifeJaneWoodward half of the proffits that yearly accruesfrommyPlantationwhere I now live so long as she keeps my Widdow andwhenshemarrys toquit claim to the Plantation and my will is she shalleverafterhaveYearly p'd out of the profits of the s'd Plantationsixpoundscurrantmonys of this Province dureing her naturall life. ItemIgivebequeathunto my son Joseph Woodward ye other half of myPlantationduringhismother's widdowhood and my will is he shall have &enjoythewholePlantation (If his mother shall marry) to the use & behoofeofhim &hisHeirs for Ever paying as afores'd Six pounds Curr't monystohismotherduring her naturall life. And ever after to be the ffreeEstateofhim &his Heirs. Item I give and bequeath to my DaughterMarthaBakerfivepounds in monys or a Cow equivalent to the sum. Item Igive&bequeath tomy Daughter Jane Woodward twenty pound in Curr't monysofthisProvince.Item, I give and bequeath to my Daughter MaryWoodwardtwentypoundCurr't monys of this Province. Item I give andbequeath tomyDaughterSarah Woodward twenty pounds Curr't monys of thisProvince.Item,I give& bequeath to my Eldest son Richard Woodward fourshillings orapair ofgloves. Item I give and bequeath to my son ThomasWoodwardfourshillingsor a pair of gloves. Item I give and bequeath to mysonEdwd.Woodwardfour shillings or a pair of gloves and my Will is thatthesaidRichardThomas and Edward shall quit all claims to the remainingpartofmyEstate real & psonal. Item I constitute and appoint mywellbelovedwifeJane Woodward and my son Joseph Woodward my trueandlawfullExecutors tosee this my last Will & Testam't faithfullyexecutedandperformedaccording to the true intent & meaning hereof. And doorderthemmy s'dExecutors to pay my funerall charges & all my just debtsoutofmypersonall Estate as household goods &ct. & then the remainingpartofmypersonall Estate to be equally divided her part amongstallmychildrenor their Heirs. Lastly I will that my son RichardWoodwardofThornburyand my son Edwd. Woodward be my overseers that this myWillbefaithfullyperformed. And I hereby declare this to be my Will andSetttomy hand &seal the day & year before mentioned. RICHD. ENDORSEMENTS. Chester, Jan'ry 8th 1706. Then personally appeared JosephJervis&JamesCooper two of the Witnesses w'thin named and ontheirSolemnAttestaconsdid declare they saw the w'thin named RichardWoodwardSignSeal Publishand declare the w'thin writing to be his lastWill &Testam'tand that atthe doing thereof he was of sound mind andmemory&understanding to thebest of their knowledge.
