Herman Hambsch spend some time in a Russian POW camp after WWII when he was nearly shot for stealing potatoes while performing KP (kitchen police duty, i.e., working in the kitchen to prepare meals, serve food, and clean up). I was told that he was being informed on by another German prisoner. (After the war, Herman and his friends hunted and searched for this man whenever there was news of returning POW's. I understand that they had all swore to kill this guy!) The story, for him not being shot, goes something like this: Herman, who was an Auto mechanic, at an earlier point in time was authorized by the camp council to fix the Russian camp Commander's car (a captured German Adler staff car?) for extra food rations. This is how the Camp commander got to know Herman. After the potato stealing incident, the Russians had him lined up on the wall to be shot but they needed the 'ok' of the commander. The commander drove up and just happened to look at the man to be shot. He immediately ordered Herman to be released since he wanted to be sure he had someone to fix the car in case it broke down. Apparently he really loved that car and was willing to forgo punishing Herman for the food stealing incident to have a mechanic on hand. The Hambsch family business consisted wholesaling locally made soft drinks and purchased mineral waters. Herman started to drink heavily while making deliveries to various bars, guesthouses, and restaurants in the vicinity of Kaiserslautern.
